Former Conservative MP, television personality and Reform UK politician Ann Widdecombe has died at the age of 78 after being found at her remote home in Devon, prompting a major murder investigation.
Police confirmed on Friday that detectives are treating her death as murder after officers attended her property on Dartmoor on Thursday. Investigators are now searching for a man they believe may be connected to the case.
It is understood that Widdecombe’s carer discovered her body at the property before emergency services were called. Officers have not disclosed full details surrounding the circumstances of her death, saying inquiries remain at an early stage.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed specialist detectives are leading the investigation, while forensic teams continue to examine the property and the surrounding area. Roads leading to the secluded home have been closed as officers carry out extensive searches.
Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson said: “This is an extremely tragic incident and our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of Ann Widdecombe at this difficult time.
“Our murder enquiry is in its early stages but moving at a significant pace. We are deploying all of the necessary resources to find out exactly what has happened and to locate the person responsible who we believe to be a white male.”
Authorities said further details about the circumstances of the incident are being withheld while detectives continue gathering evidence.
A spokesperson for the Devon, Plymouth and Torbay Coroner’s Office confirmed that preliminary inquiries remain ongoing.
Following the news, Widdecombe’s management expressed their shock and sadness.
Cloud9 Management said in a statement: “We are absolutely devastated.”
The agency described the former politician as someone who “loved the cut and thrust of political debate” and praised her as a “consummate professional” throughout her long public career.
Tributes quickly poured in from across the political spectrum as news of the investigation spread.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the circumstances surrounding Widdecombe’s death as “extremely distressing”, adding: “My thoughts are with Ann’s family and loved ones.”
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch also paid tribute, remembering Widdecombe as a “formidable politician.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the development “really shocking news” and praised her as a “distinguished politician.”
He also appealed directly to the public for assistance, saying: “He’s clearly dangerous, and I implore everybody who’s got any information in relation to him to help the police with their inquiries, get him into police custody.”
