Vernon Kay may be facing one of the most emotional periods of his personal life, but professionally, the BBC presenter is proving more unstoppable than ever. Just days after confirming the end of his 23-year marriage to Tess Daly, Vernon has officially retained his crown as the UK’s most popular radio presenter — with millions still tuning in every single week.
The BBC confirmed on Thursday that Vernon’s mid-morning show on BBC Radio 2 continues to dominate the UK airwaves for the second consecutive year, attracting an enormous 6.6 million weekly listeners. The achievement cements his status as one of Britain’s most successful broadcasters, despite the intense public attention surrounding his split from Tess.

The 52-year-old presenter stepped into the hugely challenging role previously held by broadcasting legend Ken Bruce back in 2023, and many initially questioned whether he could fill such enormous shoes. But the latest listening figures suggest Vernon has not only succeeded — he has become one of the BBC’s biggest stars in his own right.
BBC Radio 2 also maintained its position as the UK’s most listened-to radio station overall, pulling in 12.6 million listeners weekly.
The latest success comes amid increasing speculation that Vernon could be lined up for an even bigger role at the BBC. Earlier this year, bookmakers tipped him as the favourite to replace Scott Mills on the Radio 2 breakfast show following reports surrounding the presenter’s departure over alleged “personal conduct” concerns.

Other names linked to the role include Rylan Clark, Clara Amfo and veteran broadcaster Tony Blackburn, but Vernon was reportedly the early frontrunner with bookmakers placing him firmly ahead of the competition.
Yet while his career continues to thrive, Vernon’s personal life has recently taken a heartbreaking turn.
Last week, Vernon and Tess Daly confirmed in a joint statement that they had decided to separate after more than two decades together. The couple, long regarded as one of the strongest and most enduring marriages in British showbusiness, insisted the split was amicable and that there were “no other parties involved.”
Their statement read: “After much consideration, and with a deep sense of care and respect for one another, we have made the decision to separate amicably.
“This has not been an easy choice, but it comes from a place of mutual understanding and a shared desire of what is best for both of us.
“We remain great friends and, most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority.”
The pair also requested privacy and confirmed they would not be making further public comments.

According to close friends, Vernon and Tess — who reportedly remain living together at their Buckinghamshire home for now — are determined to keep the separation respectful and drama-free.
A source claimed the couple even raised a toast to one another after releasing their statement, explaining: “They only want the best for each other and their family. There has been no big fallout, more a gradual growing apart and wanting different things.”
The news stunned many within the entertainment industry, particularly because Vernon and Tess had survived one of the most public scandals of their marriage back in 2010, when Vernon was caught exchanging inappropriate messages with glamour model Rhian Sugden.
At the time, Tess was said to be devastated by the revelation, though she ultimately forgave her husband and the couple remained together for another 16 years.
Rhian later reflected on the scandal during a Channel 4 documentary, admitting the fallout deeply affected her own life and career. She said: “I wish I’d never met him. He got to give an apology on the radio and just got to carry on.”
Now, as Vernon dominates UK radio while navigating the collapse of one of television’s most recognisable marriages, fans are watching closely to see what comes next for the presenter.
