The reasons behind the collapse of their marriage have now emerged — from Tess’s desire for a completely new life to rumours surrounding third parties

Tess Daly had reportedly been dreaming of finally putting herself first and taking a “grown-up gap year” just days before announcing her heartbreaking split from Vernon Kay after 23 years of marriage.

The former Strictly Come Dancing host, 57, is said to have become increasingly eager to explore the world after stepping away from the BBC show she fronted for more than two decades. Friends claimed Tess had spent years prioritising work and family life — and was now ready to embrace a new chapter focused entirely on herself.

On Friday, Tess and Vernon confirmed in an emotional joint statement that they had decided to separate following “much consideration” and “a deep sense of care and respect for one another.”

The couple insisted the split was amicable and stressed that their daughters, Phoebe, 21, and Amber, 16, would remain their top priority.

According to insiders speaking before the announcement, Tess had become “desperate to see the world” and hoped to spend an extended period travelling after leaving Strictly. One source claimed she even wanted to disappear for an entire year — although Vernon’s work commitments reportedly made that difficult.

The insider explained that Tess had “always put Vernon and the girls first” and now wanted “to be a bit selfish” and make the most of her “new-found freedom.”

Sources added that while Vernon was unable to commit to a year-long adventure because of his BBC Radio 2 commitments, he was said to enjoy the idea of travelling for shorter periods before returning home.

In their emotional statement, the couple said: “This has not been an easy choice, but it comes from a place of mutual understanding and a shared desire of what is best for both of us.”

They continued: “We remain great friends and, most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority.”

The pair also firmly denied rumours of outside involvement, stating: “There are no other parties involved in this decision.”

The split has stunned fans, with Tess and Vernon long regarded as one of British showbiz’s strongest couples despite surviving a major scandal in 2010 when Vernon admitted to sending inappropriate messages to glamour model Rhian Sugden.

At the time, Tess was said to have been devastated by the revelations, though the couple eventually worked through the crisis and remained together for another 16 years.

Friends close to the pair admitted they were blindsided by the separation, with one saying they “did not see it coming” and describing the situation as “very, very sad.”

The couple, who also worked together on commercial campaigns and regularly shared family moments online, had continued presenting a united front publicly until the announcement shocked fans on Friday.
