David Beckham was left visibly devastated as England’s World Cup dream came to a painful end following a dramatic 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina.
The former England captain, 51, appeared close to tears in the stands at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday night after Argentina scored twice late in the game to overturn the Three Lions’ lead.
David watched the emotional clash alongside wife Victoria, 52, and their children Romeo, 23, Cruz, 21, and Harper, 15. Cruz’s girlfriend Jackie Apostel, 30, was also seated with the family.
At the final whistle, David and Victoria were seen holding their heads in their hands as the scale of the defeat sank in.
The football legend struggled to contain his emotions, with Cruz leaning towards his father to comfort him. Victoria was also pictured consoling her husband as he wiped his face in the stands.
The night had begun with hope for England, who took the lead in the second half when Anthony Gordon found the net.
David erupted with joy as the goal went in, roaring from his seat while Victoria jumped up and threw herself into his arms.
Her energetic reaction was particularly noticeable after she became the subject of jokes during England’s quarter-final victory over Norway, when she remained seated while David and the children celebrated Jude Bellingham’s goal.
Comedian Jenny Johnson had mocked Victoria’s famous deadpan expression, writing: “There’s nothing like cheering your heart out for England from home, then they cut to Victoria and we see that classic Posh Spice smile! It’s so infectious!”
David joined in with the joke and defended his wife, replying: “She was celebrating inside, I promise her reactions were slightly slower than mine.”
This time, however, there was no doubt about Victoria’s excitement as she leaped into David’s arms when England moved 1-0 ahead.
The celebrations did not last.
Argentina staged a dramatic late comeback, with Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez scoring just seven minutes apart to destroy England’s hopes of reaching the World Cup final.
The turnaround left the Beckham family stunned.
David had followed England throughout the tournament across the United States, hoping the national team could finally bring home the trophy he had pursued throughout his own international career.
The semi-final also presented him with a complicated personal dilemma, as England faced Lionel Messi’s Argentina. Messi plays for Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer club co-owned by David, and the pair have developed a close relationship.
Despite that connection, David’s allegiance was never in doubt as he joined his family in passionately supporting the Three Lions.
Before kick-off, the Beckhams stood for the national anthem alongside England supporters, although their singing was reportedly overwhelmed by loud boos from Argentina fans.
David appeared emotional even before the match began, wiping his face during the anthem and looking tense as he waited for the action to start.
As the game unfolded, Cruz was seen raising his arms enthusiastically while David appeared to explain moments of play to Victoria.
The former Spice Girl has previously admitted she did not enjoy attending football matches in the early years of her relationship with David because she often felt unwelcome.
“I never enjoyed watching football. I never felt necessarily wanted at the matches,” Victoria told the Financial Times in 2024.
“I’m not saying this as in, poor me, but it was never the fun that it is now.”
She said her feelings changed after David retired and became involved with Inter Miami.
“Now, when we’re in Miami, I feel wanted. I’m friends with the families of the players,” she explained.
Victoria has since become a regular presence beside David at major football occasions, and she stayed close to him throughout England’s painful semi-final exit.
The couple’s emotions swung dramatically during the match—from celebrating in each other’s arms to sitting stunned after Argentina’s winning goal.
For David, who represented England 115 times and captained his country for six years, the defeat appeared deeply personal.
Having watched the Three Lions come within one game of the final, the former footballer was ultimately left fighting back tears as his family gathered around him in support.
