Rio & Kate Ferdinand Flee Their £6.5 Million Dubai Mansion After Being Forced to Shelter in a Basement in Terror — Their Dubai Dream Turns Into a Nightmare

Rio and Kate Ferdinand have made a dramatic exit from their luxury Dubai life, fleeing to Portugal after terrifying missile strikes left the family shaken and hiding in their basement.

The couple, who relocated to the UAE just last year with their young children Cree, five, and Shae, two, as well as Rio’s teenage daughter Tia, were caught in the middle of escalating tensions across the Middle East. What was meant to be a glamorous new chapter quickly turned into a nightmare.

Kate, 34, had previously tried to reassure fans that they were safe, but admitted the experience had been deeply unsettling. She shared that they had spent “a very scary night” sleeping in their basement as missiles were launched across the region. She explained she hadn’t spoken out sooner because she couldn’t find the words and didn’t want to worry people, but confirmed that they were safe and being well protected, while also describing the situation as incredibly eye-opening.

She added that despite her fears, she trusted the authorities, but couldn’t hide how frightening it was. Still, she tried to keep things light for the children, saying Cree and Shae even saw it as a “sleepover in the basement,” unaware of the danger unfolding above them.

Rio, 47, also opened up about the ordeal, admitting it had been “a bit of a scary situation.” Speaking on his podcast, he described hearing missiles, planes and loud explosions overhead, saying they didn’t fully understand what was happening in real time. He stressed how important it was to stay calm for the children, even as the uncertainty grew around them.

In a quiet but telling move, Rio later shared a photo from their Portugal retreat — far from the chaos — casually enjoying a beer in the sunshine. The post, captioned with football banter about Liverpool and Chelsea dropping points, made no mention of their sudden relocation, but the change in backdrop spoke volumes.

The family’s £6.5 million Dubai mansion now sits empty as they take refuge in their European holiday home in the Algarve, near Quinta do Lago.

Notably, Rio’s older sons Lorenz and Tate remained in the UK to continue pursuing their football careers and were not part of the move to Dubai.

The escape comes shortly after Kate had insisted she loved living in Dubai and that their son was even learning Arabic — a stark contrast to the fear and uncertainty that ultimately forced their sudden departure.
