Kate and Rio Ferdinand Ferdinand have found themselves at the centre of a festive backlash after flying back to the UK for what critics branded a “freebie” Christmas — just months after relocating their family to Dubai.
The couple, who moved earlier this year, sparked debate after sharing an Instagram video showing them enjoying an early Christmas celebration in a luxury London property provided through a brand partnership with Airbnb.

A new life in Dubai — and a return home for Christmas
Kate, 34, and Rio, 47, announced their move to Dubai back in August, describing it as a bold new chapter for their family. Rio’s daughter Tia, 14, from his late wife Rebecca Ellison, alongside his children with Kate — Cree, four, and Shae, two — have all settled into life abroad. His eldest sons, Lorenz, 19, and Tate, 17, remain in the UK to continue their football ambitions.
At the time, Kate told followers the move felt long overdue, admitting she felt “a bit scared, excited & nervous — but more than anything, ready for fresh starts and new beginnings.”
Rio later echoed that sentiment in an interview with LBC, saying Dubai offered his children a lifestyle where they felt more “valued,” praising the safety, weather and overall quality of life.

‘Freebie Christmas’ sparks online criticism
However, the festive mood shifted when Kate posted footage of the family cooking Christmas dinner in a lavish London Airbnb, complete with a towering tree and children opening presents. She thanked Airbnb for hosting them, clearly labelling the post with #ad and #airbnbpartner.
While many fans loved the cosy family scenes, others were far less impressed. Some followers questioned why a wealthy celebrity couple should receive complimentary stays, with one writing: “Yay, let’s give the millionaires a freebie!!!” Another added sarcastically: “Glad the man of the people gets a freebie holiday.”
Despite the criticism, supportive comments flooded in too, with fans calling the moment “wholesome” and wishing the family well for their first Christmas living overseas.
