Sir Alex Ferguson has been seen in public for the first time since a health scare forced him to miss Manchester United’s highly anticipated clash against Liverpool last month.
The legendary former Manchester United manager, now 84, was taken to hospital as a precaution on May 3 after he was due to attend the Premier League fixture at Old Trafford. Although he was transported by ambulance roughly an hour before kick-off, the situation was not considered an emergency, and he was later discharged to continue recovering at home.

Now, in a reassuring update for football fans around the world, Ferguson has been photographed smiling and looking relaxed during a visit to a restaurant in Wilmslow, Greater Manchester.
The iconic manager posed for a photograph with restaurant employee and football fan Vimal Devassy, who later shared the special moment on social media alongside a heartfelt message.
Reflecting on the encounter, Vimal explained that meeting Ferguson meant far more to him than simply meeting a football celebrity.
He wrote: “Not every photo tells a story – some capture a feeling. I wasn’t shaking because I met a football legend.
“I was shaking because I was standing beside a man who helped shape the journey of my idol, Cristiano Ronaldo. I’m not the biggest Manchester United fan, but my admiration for Sir Alex Ferguson and the special relationship he built with Ronaldo has always inspired me.
“A moment I’ll never forget. Thank you, Sir Alex.”

The photograph quickly delighted supporters, many of whom were relieved to see the former manager appearing cheerful following concerns about his health.
Ferguson remains one of the most influential figures in football history. During his remarkable 26-year reign at Manchester United, he transformed the club into a global powerhouse, winning 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies and numerous domestic honours before retiring in 2013.
Speaking about their brief interaction, Vimal later told The Sun: “I met him at our restaurant, and before he left, I asked if he would mind taking a photo with me.
“He happily agreed, which I really appreciated. It was a simple but special moment that I’ll always remember.”
Further encouraging news came from League Managers’ Association chief executive Richard Bevan, who recently revealed that Ferguson is “on the mend” after being unable to attend the organisation’s annual awards ceremony.
His absence was felt throughout the event, particularly when the prestigious Sir Alex Ferguson Trophy was presented to Manager of the Year winner Frank Lampard. England manager Thomas Tuchel stepped in to present the award and read a personal letter from Ferguson.
Addressing the audience, Tuchel said: “It is, of course, not the same without Sir Alex himself, and we wish him all the best and a speedy recovery so that he is hopefully with us next year on stage again.
“Until then, I have the privilege to read this letter to you, Frank.”
For many football supporters, the latest photograph serves as a welcome sign that one of the sport’s greatest figures is continuing his recovery and remains in good spirits after a worrying few weeks.
