TV presenter Michaela Strachan has spoken movingly about undergoing a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. The 59-year-old Springwatch star called the life-saving procedure “extremely brutal” and even “archaic,” opening up about how deeply it affected her emotionally.

“I never thought my boobs were a big part of who I was,” she said during an appearance on Vanessa. “But the moment they said I’d lose them, they suddenly felt like everything.”
Now more than a decade later and cancer-free, Michaela says she hopes in 50 years’ time, women won’t have to endure such drastic treatment. “Surely there must be a better way,” she added.
The presenter also shared how she felt disconnected from her own experience until much later. “You think you’ll be fine, but it hits you after. Emotionally, it’s massive.”

Michaela recovered through two six-week stages — one for the mastectomy and another for reconstructive surgery. She now barely thinks about the ordeal but remembers the emotional burden it brought.
Tragically, 2014 was a year of heavy loss for her: a sister-in-law passed from cancer, her partner’s best friend died from a heart attack, and a friend’s 35-year-old son also lost his life.

Yet she found strength. She became an ambassador for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and continued hosting Springwatch. Earlier this year, she stunned fans by making it to the final of Dancing On Ice, becoming the oldest contestant ever to do so.
“I’m proud that I still push myself,” she said. “No matter what happens, there’s life after cancer — and strength you didn’t know you had.”
