Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle, has undergone life-saving surgery to amputate his left leg below the knee — and now faces a second major procedure as doctors warn the next few days will be “critical”.

The 81-year-old retired Hollywood lighting director endured a three-hour emergency operation in Cebu, Philippines, after a blood clot suddenly cut off circulation to his lower leg, leaving the flesh “blue and then black”, according to his son, Thomas Markle Jr.

Tom Jr recalled the terrifying moment everything changed. He said his father “was being very brave” but that the decline was shockingly fast. He explained they rushed to a local hospital where scans revealed the limb could not be saved, adding that doctors told him bluntly the leg had to be removed or his father might die.

He said doctors made it clear there was “no option” and the surgery was performed immediately after Mr Markle was transferred by ambulance to a larger hospital in Cebu. “It was a life-or-death situation,” Tom Jr said. “They were worried about infection — sepsis or gangrene. The flesh was black and dying.”

Mr Markle is now in intensive care in a stable but fragile condition and still requires another procedure to remove a blood clot in his thigh. One doctor treating him warned that the next 24 to 72 hours are “critical”, especially given his age and medical history.

The former lighting director moved to the Philippines earlier this year, telling the Daily Mail he hoped for “a new life” far away from what he called the “constant pain” of being estranged from Meghan. The Duchess of Sussex has not commented on her father’s condition, and Prince Harry has still never met his father-in-law.

Thomas raised Meghan single-handedly from age 11 to 18, but their relationship collapsed shortly before her 2018 royal wedding. He posed for staged paparazzi photos, later said Meghan was “furious”, then suffered two heart attacks that prevented him from walking her down the aisle. He has also battled a severe stroke in 2022 that temporarily stole his ability to speak.

As her father lies in hospital, Meghan has released new behind-the-scenes footage from her Netflix Christmas special With Love, Meghan. Meanwhile, Tom Jr says the Markle family has been “deeply touched” by messages of support from around the world, especially from the UK.

He added: “Dad has a long road ahead. This was a major operation but it saved his life. I would appeal to Meghan to show him compassion at this very difficult time.”

The Sussexes have not issued any statement.
