Kept It Quiet for 7 Months, Heather Peace Reveals Secret Cancer Battle While Filming EastEnders

EastEnders actress Heather Peace has shared her deeply personal journey, revealing she was secretly battling breast cancer while continuing to appear on the BBC soap for seven months.

The 49-year-old, who plays Eve Unwin, opened up on Instagram with a heartfelt message and video, informing fans that she had completed chemotherapy after undergoing surgery earlier in her treatment. Her brave announcement has left fans and co-stars in awe.

Heather praised the EastEnders team for helping her maintain privacy, especially the makeup department who provided her with a wig and helped keep her on-screen appearance consistent. “Thank you to the whole EE team for going above and beyond. Particularly our amazing makeup team,” she wrote, sharing a behind-the-scenes snap of her wig fitting.

In her emotional video, Heather explained: “I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the beginning of October. Since then, I’ve undergone surgery and recovery over Christmas, and today I’ve finished my chemotherapy journey.”

She likened the end of her treatment to crossing the finish line of the London Marathon: “I woke up this morning and it was like turning onto The Mall – seeing the finish line and picking up my medal.”

Reflecting on how the experience changed her, Heather said she had chosen to “narrow her world” and focus on precious time with her wife Ellie and their daughters Annie, Jessie, and Lola. “I’ve stayed still. I’ve found joy in the simplest of things,” she shared.

Her raw honesty and strength touched fans and co-stars alike. Lacey Turner called her a “superhero,” while Diane Parish described her as “tough and courageously vulnerable – a true warrior.”

Heather and her on-screen wife, Suki Panesar (played by Balvinda Sopal), made soap history earlier this year as EastEnders’ first lesbian couple to marry on the show.
