Karen Hauer has emotionally confirmed she is stepping away from Strictly Come Dancing after 14 years — but her tearful announcement has only fuelled speculation that there may be more behind her exit than meets the eye.
The 43-year-old Venezuelan–American dancer, who holds the record as the show’s longest-serving female professional, shared a heartfelt video on Instagram where she fought back tears while addressing fans. Her departure comes just weeks after reports suggested she was among several dancers axed in a dramatic shake-up of the BBC series.

Speaking candidly, Karen said: “Hey everyone, I’ve got something to tell you. It’s a tough one… after 14 years on Strictly Come Dancing, I’ve decided this is the right time for me to close this chapter and take on new projects.”
Despite the rumours swirling around a so-called “Strictly bloodbath,” Karen insisted the decision was her own — though her emotional delivery left fans questioning whether the full story has yet to be revealed.

Reflecting on her journey, she became visibly emotional as she described how far she had come, saying she never imagined “a young girl from the Bronx” would become the show’s longest-running female pro. She added that the show had “completely changed” her life, not just as a performer, but as a person.
Karen also paid tribute to the people behind the scenes, praising the crew, fellow dancers and production teams who made the show what it is. She fondly recalled working alongside legends such as Sir Bruce Forsyth and Len Goodman, and even joked about finally having time to enjoy lunches with hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.
In a touching message to fans, she said she would “never stop dancing” and reassured them this was not a final goodbye, but simply “see you later.”

Shortly after her announcement, the BBC released a statement thanking Karen for her “incredible contribution,” highlighting her passion, creativity and the “joyous routines” she brought to the ballroom over more than a decade.
The outpouring of support from fellow Strictly stars was immediate. Johannes Radebe declared there was “no one like you,” while judge Motsi Mabuse shared her love and best wishes. Former winner Ore Oduba praised her achievements, and her most recent dance partner, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, called her “a true inspiration.”
Karen’s exit comes amid one of the biggest cast shake-ups in the show’s history, with several familiar faces — including Gorka Márquez, Nadiya Bychkova, Luba Mushtuk and Michelle Tsiakkas — also leaving. The overhaul has been described by fans as a “bloodbath,” though not all departing dancers have publicly addressed the situation.
While Karen maintains her departure was a personal choice, the timing — and the tears — have left viewers wondering: was this truly her decision, or the end of an era forced upon one of Strictly’s most beloved stars?
