Jason Watkins’ Daughter Found Her Sister Dead – Now He Fears the Trauma Still Haunts Her. Jason Watkins on Telling Daughter Her Sister Wasn’t Coming Back: ‘The Hardest Thing I’ve Ever Done’

Actor Jason Watkins has opened up about the lasting emotional impact his daughter Bessie has endured following the tragic loss of her younger sister, Maude, who died from sepsis in 2011 at just two years old.

In a moment no child should face, it was Bessie—just four years old at the time—who discovered Maude unresponsive and informed her parents on New Year’s Day. Jason recalled that he immediately knew something was terribly wrong. Despite being told hours earlier that Maude had croup, he sensed the truth upon seeing her.

Jason and his wife Clara Francis were left devastated, and so was Bessie. The couple have since spoken candidly about the emotional toll the loss took on their eldest child, who turns 18 this month.

Although Bessie initially agreed to appear in the 2023 documentary In Memory of Maudie, she later pulled out, feeling too exposed after watching her own interview. Clara admitted the weight of growing up in the shadow of a sister “forever preserved as this gorgeous thing” made it emotionally overwhelming for Bessie.

In the early days of grief, Clara confessed her primal need to have another child—for Bessie’s sake. “I didn’t want her to be alone,” she said. Son Gilbert was born in 2012, and the couple say he “saved” them.

Clara also described the guilt she felt when Bessie would witness her sadness and say: “You’ve still got me. Aren’t I enough?” That heartbreak affected everything, she said, even their approach to parenting. “I just want her to be happy. I don’t care about school performance anymore.”

Jason, speaking on the Britain Get Talking podcast, recalled the crushing moment he had to tell Bessie: “Your sister is not coming back.” He said that even now, as a teenager, Bessie’s emotional ups and downs often leave them wondering whether the trauma still lingers beneath the surface.

Gilbert, now 12, has also had to carry the invisible weight of being “the one who came after.” In the documentary, Jason recounted how Gilbert once asked, “Am I Maude’s substitute?” Jason reassured him: “You’re not a replacement. You’re your own person – and thank God for that.”

In many ways, both children helped save their parents. “For Bessie to keep going after what she went through – that’s strength,” Jason said.
