Just weeks before his heartbreaking death at the age of 48, James Van Der Beek made one last, life-defining decision — quietly purchasing the sprawling Texas ranch his family had been renting in a bid to secure their future.
The Dawson’s Creek star had been battling colorectal cancer for two years. As his condition deteriorated, the actor finalised the $4.8 million (£3.5 million) purchase of the 36-acre Spicewood property on January 9 in an off-market deal, according to property records. The home, complete with multiple cabins, a pool and vast open land, had become a sanctuary for James, his wife Kimberly and their six children since relocating from Los Angeles in 2020.

Initially leasing the property, James ultimately chose to buy it outright — a move friends say was driven by his desire to create long-term stability for his family as he faced the reality of his illness.
James and Kimberly shared six children together: Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, nine, Gwendolyn, seven, and Jeremiah, four. The purchase was reportedly made via an LLC managed by a California attorney, a detail that only emerged following his passing.
In his final weeks, James was cared for in hospice, surrounded by loved ones. Friends revealed the devastating toll cancer had taken on his once-robust frame. One insider told the Daily Mail that James had been on hospice for several weeks and was rail thin when he passed. He was mostly in bed because he was very weak, and he was not eating.
The source added that watching his decline became increasingly painful, explaining that he was in hospice and they held his hand and were there for him, of course.

Despite his private battle, James had publicly shared a hopeful New Year’s message just weeks earlier. Reflecting on fresh beginnings, he wrote: Why are we celebrating a New Year in the dead of winter? The time to celebrate a new beginning, and a new you, and a new resolution, is the spring.
Following his death, a GoFundMe page was launched to help support Kimberly and the children. The fundraiser quickly surpassed £1 million. Its description read: In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds.
It continued that they are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.
Among those offering support were high-profile friends including Steven Spielberg and Zoe Saldana, who were reported to have made generous donations.
In the end, beyond the fame and fortune, James Van Der Beek’s final act was one of devotion — ensuring the land his children run across today will always remain their home.
