Veteran Brookside star Bryan Murray has moved into full-time care as his long and painful battle with Alzheimer’s disease takes a devastating toll — with his wife opening up about the emotional decision that changed everything.
The 76-year-old actor, best known for his chilling role as Trevor Jordache in the iconic Channel 4 soap, has seen his condition worsen significantly over the past year. His wife, Una, revealed that the progression of the illness left her with no choice but to seek full-time care for him.

She shared that Bryan’s needs had grown far beyond what she could manage alone, explaining that her entire life had become centred around caring for him. Now, with that responsibility shifted, she admitted she is left with a different kind of pain — the quiet absence of the man she once knew, saying she finally has time to miss him.
Speaking during the upcoming Alzheimer’s Tea Day, Una also urged the public to get involved, encouraging people to host gatherings or simply share a cup of tea with loved ones to support the cause. She stressed that what matters most is showing up and raising awareness for a condition that continues to impact countless families.

Bryan was first diagnosed in 2019 but remarkably continued acting in Irish soap Fair City, playing Bob Charles until his retirement last year. However, the illness has now progressed to the point where he no longer remembers stepping away from the show.
Una revealed that he wasn’t even aware his time on the series had come to an end — something she described as a small mercy. She explained that once the role began to cause him stress, she knew it was time for him to stop, adding that producers fully supported her decision and allowed her to take the lead in what was best for him.
In a deeply emotional admission, Una also shared that the cruel nature of the disease has taken away the joyful man she once knew. She said Bryan is no longer happy and struggles to understand what is happening around him — a heartbreaking transformation for someone who was once full of life.

Fans will remember Murray’s unforgettable portrayal of Trevor Jordache — one of British TV’s most notorious villains — whose storyline shocked audiences when the character was killed and buried beneath a patio by his wife, played by Sandra Maitland, and daughter, portrayed by Anna Friel.
The news comes amid further sadness for Brookside fans following the recent passing of co-star Marian Diamond at the age of 89, marking a poignant moment for those connected to the beloved series.
