EastEnders star Heather Peace reveals the brutal truth behind her breast cancer diagnosis, her decision to keep working while undergoing chemo, and how facing the disease alongside her wife Ellie brought their marriage to a deeper level.
Heather Peace says hearing the words “breast cancer” felt like being hit with a sledgehammer — especially as she discovered both she and her wife, Ellie Dickinson, had been diagnosed just months apart.

The EastEnders actress, best known for her role as Eve Panesar-Unwin, admitted she ignored early symptoms due to filming commitments. But just hours after seeing a doctor, she was told she had a 12cm tumour. “I felt like a dead woman walking,” Heather shared.
Ellie had already undergone a lumpectomy and radiotherapy for a smaller, aggressive lump. But Heather’s case required a full mastectomy, chemotherapy and now radiotherapy.

Still, Heather insisted on filming her dramatic on-screen wedding to Suki Panesar, fearing it might be her last. “I needed to give Eve and Suki’s love story a proper ending,” she said.
Waiting for scan results was the most terrifying part. “I was thinking about my wife, our three kids, everything I’d done. I was exhausted and just didn’t want to break anyone’s heart.”

On November 29, she underwent a mastectomy with reconstruction. Initially unsure about getting implants, Heather credits Ellie for helping her through the emotional decisions.
Hair loss, not surgery, hit her the hardest. “Losing my eyebrows and lashes devastated me,” she admitted.
Even during intense chemo, she kept filming two days a week, travelling from Brighton to Elstree. “I felt protected by everyone at EastEnders,” she said.

Now, having finished chemotherapy and turning 50, Heather plans to enjoy a two-week holiday with Ellie and their kids — Annie, 10, and twins Jesse and Lola, 8. “They’re at the golden age. I want to savour every second.”
She’s also heading on a music writing retreat after radiotherapy. “This changed me. I want to spend more time with the people who truly matter.”
And while cancer nearly broke them, Heather says it brought her and Ellie closer than ever. “Our marriage has never been stronger. That deep bond — it’s what the vows really mean.”
