David Beckham is set to be celebrated in a special television tribute as the BBC revisits the extraordinary life of one of Britain’s most iconic sports stars.
The former England captain, now 50, will be the focus of a new episode of BBC Two’s acclaimed documentary series A Life in Ten Pictures, a programme that has previously explored the lives of global legends including Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali. The show examines famous figures through the photographs that defined their journeys — and Beckham’s life has produced some of the most unforgettable images in modern sport and pop culture.

The episode comes exactly three decades after Beckham scored what many still regard as one of the greatest goals in football history. In 1996, while playing for Manchester United against Wimbledon, the young midfielder stunned fans with an audacious strike from the halfway line that sailed over the goalkeeper and into the net. A photograph of Beckham celebrating with his arms raised after that incredible moment quickly became one of the defining images of his career.
That goal was only the beginning of a cultural phenomenon. Beckham soon rose far beyond the status of a footballer, becoming a global celebrity whose influence stretched across fashion, music and popular culture — particularly after he began dating and later married Spice Girl Victoria Adams.

A television insider explained that Beckham’s impact went far beyond the pitch. The source said Becks changed the public’s perception of masculinity and football. Through fashion, trend-setting style and his marriage to one of the world’s most famous pop stars, he helped create a new type of sports celebrity. At every stage of that journey, there were photographs that millions of people instantly recognised.
The documentary will highlight several of those memorable images. Among them is the famous photograph of Beckham wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier sarong in 1998 — a bold fashion moment that sparked global headlines — as well as pictures of him and Victoria posing together in matching black leather Gucci outfits the following year.
The programme is expected to feature interviews with people who explain why each photograph captured a defining moment in Beckham’s life and career.

The tribute comes as interest in the Beckham family remains high. Recently, Beckham’s son Cruz publicly addressed the ongoing tension between the family and his older brother Brooklyn. While attending Paris Fashion Week to support his mother Victoria, Cruz was asked by a fan if there was any chance the family could repair their relationship.
His response was simple but hopeful. Cruz replied that he hoped they could.
The BBC special is expected to air later this year, offering viewers a unique look at the moments that turned David Beckham into one of the most recognisable figures in the world.
