Christian Eriksen Sparks Fresh Fears After Collapsing During Denmark Match Five Years After His Near-Fatal Cardiac Arrest

Christian Eriksen sparked fresh concern among football fans around the world after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday evening, almost five years after the terrifying cardiac arrest that nearly claimed his life during Euro 2020.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who currently plays for Wolfsburg and remains one of Denmark’s most beloved footballers, was involved in a distressing incident midway through the match. Witnesses reported that Eriksen appeared uncomfortable before placing a hand on his chest and suddenly falling to the ground.

Medical staff rushed onto the pitch within seconds as shocked teammates formed a protective circle around him. The atmosphere inside Nature Energy Park quickly turned from excitement to fear as supporters watched the dramatic scenes unfold.

Officials made the decision to abandon the match shortly afterward, prioritising the player’s wellbeing.

Fortunately, there was encouraging news soon after the incident. The Danish Football Association confirmed that Eriksen remained conscious and was responsive throughout the medical assessment.

In a statement, the federation said: “Christian Eriksen is conscious and feeling well according to the circumstances. The match has been called off.”

As paramedics continued to monitor him, fans inside the stadium began chanting Eriksen’s name in a powerful show of support. The emotional scenes echoed the worldwide outpouring of love he received following his collapse during Denmark’s Euro 2020 clash against Finland in June 2021.

After receiving treatment for around ten minutes, Eriksen managed to get back onto his feet, prompting a standing ovation from supporters and players alike before he was taken away in an ambulance accompanied by his wife, Sabrina.

Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen later suggested that Eriksen’s implanted cardiac device may have played a crucial role.

“I think it has done what it was put in place to do,” he said.

Offering further reassurance, Boesen added: “He asked to leave the field himself. That’s a really good sign.”

“He is doing well, and he asked me to greet all the players and say that he was okay.”

The frightening incident left many within Danish football visibly emotional. Former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner struggled to contain his feelings while discussing the situation on Danish television.

“These are horrible pictures, and it completely overshadows the rest of the evening,” he said.

“My thoughts are with the family and the children, and it’s a difficult situation to be in right now.”

“This is the second time it has happened, and as Christian’s friend also… it’s really terrible.”

At the time play was halted, Denmark were leading 2-1 thanks to goals from Patrick Dorgu and Joakim Maehle, while Viktor Tsygankov had scored for Ukraine.

The latest health scare inevitably brought back memories of Eriksen’s collapse during Euro 2020. In one of football’s most shocking moments, he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during Denmark’s match against Finland. Medical teams performed CPR before he was rushed to hospital, where doctors successfully stabilised him.

Following that ordeal, Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and made a remarkable return to professional football just eight months later with Brentford. He later joined Manchester United before continuing his career in Germany.

For now, football fans across the globe will be hoping that the latest update proves to be a positive sign and that Eriksen can once again overcome a frightening setback with the same courage and determination that inspired millions after his remarkable comeback.
