She’s one of the most beloved royals in Britain, but even Kate Middleton can blend into the background — as one elderly care home resident unknowingly proved. During a royal visit to Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff back in 2020, Kate and Prince William met 87-year-old Joan Drew-Smith, who delivered an unintentional yet iconic moment.

As the Princess of Wales sat next to her husband, still wearing a pandemic-era face mask, Joan pointed at Kate and innocently asked William: “Is this your assistant?” Without missing a beat, Kate burst into laughter and quipped: “Well, I’m his assistant — I have been for a long time!”
Earlier in the visit, Joan also cheekily critiqued their bingo-calling skills from a Zoom session a few months prior, bluntly telling them: “You did a s** job!”* — leaving William in stitches.

The charming moment highlighted Kate’s humility and sense of humour, and it wasn’t the only time she went unrecognised. In Scotland in 2023, a child innocently asked her who she was, prompting Kate to reply, “I’m married to William,” rather than citing any royal title.

These instances serve as a reminder that even global figures like Kate Middleton — watched by 162 million during her 2011 royal wedding — can have wonderfully human moments that melt public hearts.
