This week’s dramatic episode of 22 Kids and Counting takes viewers inside one of the Radford family’s most frightening ordeals, as Millie Radford’s husband, Harley Passmore, was rushed to hospital with suspected stroke symptoms following a heated argument about adopting her daughter, Ophelia.

Millie, daughter of Sue and Noel Radford, was left devastated when Harley suddenly collapsed during the row. The couple, who married last year, have been wrestling with the decision of whether Harley should officially adopt Ophelia, four, whom he has helped raise since she was a baby.
Harley, who has been in Ophelia’s life since she was just six months old, told cameras that he longed to make their bond official. He explained: “She’s not my biological daughter, but I’ve always treated her as my own. I want people to see us as father and daughter. One day she’ll notice that her name isn’t the same as ours, and I don’t want her to ever feel left out.”

But Millie admitted she had misgivings. “Ophelia is still so young, and we’ve never told her Harley isn’t her biological dad. I worry that when she finds out, she might resent him. I don’t want her to ever turn against him.”
The debate escalated into a blazing row — and then, suddenly, panic. Millie called her mum in tears from the back of an ambulance: “One half of his face has gone lopsided. It looks like he’s had a stroke. He’s slurring his words. He’s panicking, I’m panicking.”
As Sue and Noel stepped in to care for the children — Ophelia, Chester, three, and Elodie, one — Millie rushed to the hospital stroke ward. “It was terrifying,” she recalled. “I instantly blamed myself, thinking the argument had caused it. I couldn’t imagine life without him. He’s been with me through so much of motherhood.”
Doctors later confirmed Harley had not suffered a stroke but was experiencing Bell’s Palsy, a condition that causes paralysis on one side of the face. Relieved, Harley said: “My MRI was fine. That meant it wasn’t a stroke.”
For Millie, the health scare changed everything. “When I thought he was having a stroke, I realised how much we all needed him. That made me change my mind. I’ve started the adoption paperwork. Ophelia deserves to officially have Harley as her dad.”
The emotional episode captured not only the fragility of life but also the strength of family bonds and the resilience that can emerge from crisis.
