Mathew Horne was visibly emotional as he shared devastating news during a live appearance – a crew member from Gavin and Stacey had tragically passed away. The 46-year-old actor, best known for playing Gavin Shipman in the beloved BBC comedy, was speaking at an In Conversation With event in Taunton, Somerset when he paused mid-sentence, clearly overwhelmed.

“I’m sorry. I got distracted,” Mathew admitted, choking up in front of the audience. “Earlier on… we had a driver on the finale called Rob. He was in his early 40s… and I found out via the WhatsApp group earlier that he has passed away.”
“He was a really lovely guy and he’s left a four-year-old behind. That is really, really, really sad.”

Horne’s heartbreak was palpable as he reflected on the tight-knit nature of the Gavin and Stacey team, a bond that has lasted since the show first aired in 2007 and concluded with its finale on Christmas Day 2024. That final episode drew a staggering 19.1 million viewers.
Speaking further, Horne opened up about the deep personal support he’s received from his co-stars. Following the loss of his own mother in 2019, Alison Steadman, who played Pam – his on-screen mum – stepped into a maternal role off-screen as well.

“Alison really stepped up. She became my surrogate mother,” he shared. “Whenever she texts me, she signs it ‘Mum’ and she says, ‘How are you, my little prince?’ It means the world to me.”
The touching moment highlighted the enduring bonds formed behind the scenes of one of Britain’s most loved sitcoms. While the show may have ended, the impact of its cast and crew continues to be deeply felt.
There are whispers of potential spin-offs involving side characters like Dawn and Pete, a sign that the Gavin and Stacey legacy may yet live on.
