Like Father, Like Son – He’s Only 15 But Already Making Headlines – Kai Rooney’s Star Rises as Dad Watches On. Proud dad Wayne Rooney watches on as 15-year-old Kai scores in the very tournament where his own journey began — a full-circle moment 25 years in the making

Wayne and Coleen Rooney were beaming with pride as they cheered on their 15-year-old son Kai at the 2025 Super Cup NI, where he played for Manchester United’s youth team. The proud parents made their way to Coleraine, Northern Ireland, bringing along their younger sons Kit, eight, and Cass, six, to support their brother in the prestigious tournament.

Wayne and Coleen Rooney were every inch the supportive parents as they watched their son Kai play for Manchester United in the 2025 Super Cup NI (pictured with their younger sons)

The moment was especially sentimental for Wayne, who once played in the same tournament – then called the Milk Cup – back in 2000. Now, watching his son follow a similar path, he was filled with both nostalgia and admiration.

Wayne, dressed in an all-black outfit, smiled for the cameras while Coleen looked stylish in a pink T-shirt and burgundy jacket. The couple, who also share son Klay, 11, were clearly soaking up every second of Kai’s big moment.

Earlier in the week, Kai scored a goal in a 3-0 win over West Cork Academy, cementing his growing reputation. He also took to the pitch again on Wednesday night as United faced Co Tyrone at the Riada Stadium.

Speaking to Super Cup NI, Wayne said he avoids putting pressure on Kai and instead just lets him play and enjoy the game. “He just plays, that’s what he’s done his whole time playing,” Wayne shared. “It’s unfair to expect too much – he’s just 15, just enjoying football.”

Wayne acknowledged that Kai naturally attracts more attention due to his famous surname but praised the teen for handling the spotlight with maturity.

The Super Cup NI, which began on Sunday and concludes on Friday, is known for spotlighting future football stars. Manchester United has participated for four decades, and Kai appears to be one of the standout young names this year.

Off the pitch, the Rooneys have also been enjoying family time. Just days earlier, Coleen was spotted at the Together Again Festival at Bolesworth Castle with her sons, dancing with little Cass on her shoulders. She later posted photos of their weekend, writing, “Thanks for looking after us Together Again Fest… Kids had a ball!”
