Chris Tarrant reveals the heartbreaking reason he stepped away from television after 52 years: “I lost five close friends in just one year. I’ve worked all my life—now I want to live.”

Chris Tarrant has finally opened up about the deeply personal reason he chose to walk away from television after more than five decades on air.

The iconic presenter, best known for hosting Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? from 1998 to 2014, shocked fans last year when he confirmed his retirement from the screen. But in a candid appearance on Good Morning Britain, the 78-year-old revealed the heartbreaking truth behind his decision.

“I used to work like a dog, for years,” Chris confessed to hosts Charlotte Hawkins and Richard Madeley. “I lost five really good mates, my sort of age, over about 12 months. I just thought, well, you know, I’m about the same age, I’ve worked very hard all my life.”

Reflecting on that painful period, Chris made a life-changing decision. “I thought, do I really want to spend the rest of my life—whether that’s a year, 10 years, 20—inside radio and TV studios? No, I don’t. So now I just pop in to plug my book and go home again.”

Despite stepping away from the spotlight, Chris says he’s loving his quieter life. “I enjoyed working, but now I have a really good time!” he smiled.

Richard jokingly asked if he would consider joining I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! — but Chris wasn’t having it. “No, I really wouldn’t,” he laughed. “I couldn’t stand it. I don’t want to lie with my head covered in maggots and them going down my trousers. No thanks.”

As the interview wrapped up, Charlotte teased Richard for accidentally calling Jeremy Clarkson “Chris” when he took over as host on Millionaire. Chris chuckled, “When you do a show like that, one of the briefings should be: know the name of the host! It’s very important.”

Now enjoying his well-earned rest, Chris Tarrant has no regrets. He’s swapped primetime for peace—and says he wouldn’t change a thing.
