From Fear To Family: Kate Ferdinand Celebrates 35th Birthday In Portugal After Stepson Tate’s Heartfelt Admission About Their Early Relationship

Kate Ferdinand marked her 35th birthday in style this week, enjoying a sun-soaked yacht trip in Portugal with husband Rio Ferdinand, their children, and close friends. But behind the glamorous family getaway lies a powerful story of how a once-complicated blended family grew into the close-knit unit they are today.

The former TOWIE star shared a collection of joyful holiday photos on Instagram, giving fans a glimpse into the celebrations. Kate looked stunning in a bright yellow bikini as she relaxed aboard a luxury yacht, while former footballer Rio, 47, showcased his athletic physique in black swimming shorts during a swim in the ocean.

The family spent the day paddleboarding, sunbathing, enjoying lunch by the sea, and making memories together. Kate summed up the occasion simply by writing: “A birthday to remember.”

The celebration comes shortly after Kate and her stepson Tate opened up about the difficult early stages of their relationship during a candid episode of her podcast, Blended.

Joining Kate and Rio on the podcast, Tate, now 18, revealed that he initially struggled when his father began dating Kate after the death of his mother, Rebecca Ellison.

Speaking honestly about those early days, Tate admitted: “In that moment I thought you were taking him away, almost. That’s how it felt.”

He explained that he and his brother Lorenz would often listen through doors to conversations between Kate and Rio, trying to understand what was happening in their lives.

Despite those feelings, Tate also acknowledged that their bond gradually developed. Reflecting on the past, he told Kate: “When it was good, I loved you.”

Kate remembered the moment their relationship truly changed, recalling how emotional she felt when Tate first referred to her as his stepmother rather than simply his dad’s partner.

Their conversation also touched on the arrival of Kate and Rio’s children together. Tate admitted that during Kate’s first pregnancy, he never imagined he would eventually love younger siblings Cree and Shae as much as he does today.

“At the time I never thought I would love Cree and Shae the way we do now,” he confessed.

The family also discussed the challenges of authority within blended households. Tate admitted he often resisted Kate’s attempts to guide him because he struggled to accept her role in the family.

“I felt you were trying to tell me what to do,” he said, adding: “Who are you to tell me what to do?”

Over time, however, those tensions eased as trust and understanding grew between them.

Kate married Rio in 2019 and became stepmother to Tate, Lorenz, and Tia following the heartbreaking death of their mother Rebecca from breast cancer in 2015 at the age of 34. Since then, Kate and Rio have welcomed two children of their own, son Cree and daughter Shae.

The family’s strong bond was also evident earlier this week when they celebrated Tate’s 18th birthday at their villa in Portugal. Kate made sure Rebecca’s memory remained part of the occasion by displaying a treasured photograph of Tate and Lorenz with their late mother among the party decorations.

The touching tribute deeply moved fans, many of whom praised Kate for continuing to honour Rebecca’s place within the family.

Photos from the celebration showed all five children together with Kate and Rio, alongside elaborate decorations, candlelit displays, giant illuminated letters spelling “Tate,” and personalised party details created especially for the milestone occasion.

As Kate celebrated another birthday surrounded by family, the holiday offered more than just beautiful scenery and sunshine. It served as a reminder of how far the Ferdinand family has come—from uncertainty and heartbreak to a relationship built on honesty, respect, and love.
