Bonnie Tyler suffered a burst appendix and underwent emergency surgery in Portugal after earlier tests in London failed to provide clear results. She is now in an induced coma, while her husband, Robert Sullivan, is reportedly keeping vigil by her bedside every day

Bonnie Tyler is fighting through a serious health crisis in Portugal after a close friend revealed she needed emergency surgery when her appendix burst.

The 74-year-old Welsh music legend, who has a home in the Algarve, reportedly began suffering severe abdominal pain shortly after arriving in Portugal, following earlier inconclusive tests in London.

Her friend, Algarve businessman Liberto Mealha, said: “She started feeling unwell during a concert in London and went to a doctor for tests, but they didn’t detect anything there.”

He added: “She decided to travel to the Algarve, where she began to feel severe abdominal pain. Two days later, she went to a private hospital, which urgently transferred her to the hospital in Faro because her appendix had burst and she needed emergency surgery.”

Bonnie remains in intensive care at Faro Hospital, where doctors have placed her in an induced coma “to aid her recovery.” Reports in Portugal claim she is being treated with strong antibiotics following surgery.

Her devoted husband Robert Sullivan is said to be spending his days at her bedside, only returning home at night to sleep.

Mr Mealha said Robert is deeply grateful to the Faro medical team and believes that “if Bonnie had stayed in the United Kingdom she would no longer be here.”

The singer’s spokesman previously said: “The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

After reports that her condition had worsened, the spokesman added: “Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery. We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time please.”

Fans have since flooded social media with messages of support. One well-wisher wrote: “Come on Bonnie girl. Us Welshies don’t give up. Here is to a full recovery.”

Another fan shared hope after her own husband had once been cared for at Faro Hospital, writing that staff had looked after him well and that she hoped they would do the same for Bonnie.

The Total Eclipse of the Heart star, who represented the UK at Eurovision in 2013, is believed to have been rushed to hospital on April 30 after weeks of persistent pain.
