Russell T Davies looked completely smitten as he soaked up a romantic escape to Venice with his much younger boyfriend Oliver Cole — marking a deeply personal new chapter in his life after years of grief.
The 62-year-old television powerhouse, best known for reviving Doctor Who, shared a series of joyful Instagram snaps showing the couple laughing together aboard a speedboat gliding through the iconic canals of Venice.

Beaming in the sunshine, both Russell and Oliver couldn’t hide their happiness, flashing wide smiles as they embraced the moment — a striking image of love rediscovered.
Russell first went public with Oliver over Christmas 2025, posting a cosy selfie alongside the caption: Merry Christmas! From me & Oliver. But eagle-eyed fans had already begun speculating weeks earlier, when Oliver appeared exploring the legendary TARDIS set — even joking in a post: 27 – Another Year Passes. But it’s alright I have a TARDIS x.
He quickly reassured fans he wasn’t stepping into the Time Lord’s shoes, adding: Not the new Doctor Promise x — a playful nod that only fueled intrigue around their relationship.

According to close friends, the connection between the pair runs far deeper than appearances. One insider revealed Oliver has brought a great deal of joy into Russell’s life and they make each other genuinely happy, adding that despite the age gap, they are very much on the same wavelength — and this relationship could go the distance.
For Russell, the romance marks his first serious relationship since the devastating loss of his husband, Andrew Smith, who died in 2018 following a long battle with a brain tumour.
The couple had shared more than two decades together, with Russell stepping away from his career for over two years to care for Andrew during his illness — something he later described as the greatest work I’ll ever do on this Earth.

Reflecting on his grief, Russell once admitted that while he expected to miss loving his partner, he hadn’t anticipated how deeply he would miss being loved in return — a loss he described as something no one prepares you for.
Yet now, years later, as he speeds through the waterways of Venice with Oliver by his side, Russell appears to be embracing love once more — proof that even after unimaginable heartbreak, life can still surprise you with joy.
