Alfie Boe has opened up in deeply emotional fashion about the painful fallout from his divorce, admitting the breakdown of his marriage left him in one of the darkest periods of his life.
The opera star, 52, separated from his ex-wife Sarah in 2020 after 16 years of marriage, and has now revealed how difficult it was to stay silent about what really happened behind closed doors. Speaking candidly, Alfie said: “It’s just a shame when you can’t tell the truth and you take the higher ground.”

His comments offer a raw glimpse into the heartbreak he has carried since the split, particularly after Sarah moved back to the United States with their two children, Grace, 17, and Alfie Jr., 13. For Alfie, the pain was not only about the end of his marriage, but also about the emotional toll of being separated from his children.
He admitted that many people never truly understood why his family moved away, and that the public assumptions surrounding the separation only made things harder. “People don’t understand why the children moved away, and it’s painful,” he said.

The singer has previously spoken about how the end of the relationship had a serious impact on his mental health, leaving him struggling through an intensely difficult chapter. Looking back, he described it as a period when he felt completely overwhelmed and emotionally lost.
Alfie and Sarah had once appeared to have built a happy family life together. After years living in the US, they moved to the Cotswolds in 2018, but tensions reportedly grew during the pandemic before the marriage finally came to an end.
Even after the split, Alfie continued to speak warmly about Sarah, previously describing her as an “incredible partner” and an “amazing mother.” But despite maintaining that respect, he has made clear that the emotional wounds from the breakup have not fully disappeared.
Now, Alfie appears to be moving into a new chapter. His romance with Elizabeth Worth, 29, has brought a fresh sense of hope, with the pair recently enjoying time together in London. Before that, he was also linked to Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham, though that reported romance was said to have remained low-key.

Still, it is clear that while love may have returned to his life, healing has been a much longer road. Alfie’s latest comments show that behind the success and the public smile, he has been carrying grief, silence and heartbreak for years.
His story now stands as a moving reminder that life after a painful breakup can be far more complicated than it appears, and that sometimes the hardest burden is the truth left unspoken.
