The tragic death of Married At First Sight star Mel Schilling has reignited heartbreaking questions about how her cancer journey began — and the moment she says she was “gaslit” by a doctor who failed to take her symptoms seriously.
The beloved TV personality passed away this week, just two weeks after revealing in an emotional Instagram post that there was nothing more doctors could do. But long before that devastating moment, Mel had already faced a different kind of battle — one where her pain was dismissed.

Back in 2024, Mel spoke candidly about a consultation that would later haunt her. She explained that a GP had “completely minimised” her symptoms, despite her experiencing severe stomach pain, unexplained weight loss, and an inability to go to the toilet.
She recalled how the doctor brushed it off as something minor, saying it was “basically medical gaslighting,” adding that women’s abdominal pain is often too quickly dismissed as hormonal. Mel said she was effectively told to “just suck it up and get on with it, princess,” before being sent home with laxatives.
Even when she insisted it wasn’t related to her period and was clearly digestive, the diagnosis remained unchanged — constipation.

At the time, she was filming MAFS Australia in 2023. After leaving the appointment, she took painkillers “through gritted teeth,” but they barely touched the agony. She later admitted she could hardly remember filming over the next two nights, describing it as an “out-of-body experience” as the pain worsened.
Weeks later, the truth finally emerged — Mel was diagnosed with colon cancer and underwent surgery to remove a tumour the size of a lemon.
Despite the shock, she refused to step away from her work. She continued filming while enduring 16 rounds of chemotherapy, hiding just how physically drained she had become from viewers watching at home.
In 2024, further complications arose when small nodules were discovered in her lungs. Yet even then, there was a glimmer of hope — Mel was approved for a groundbreaking clinical trial tailored to her specific gene type, set to begin this month.

But in a cruel twist, everything changed again in December when she began suffering severe headaches. Tests revealed the cancer had spread to her brain.
Her husband Gareth confirmed her passing in a deeply emotional tribute, revealing her final moments were filled with love.
He shared that in her last seconds, when he believed she could no longer speak, Mel pulled him close and whispered a message for him and their daughter Maddie — a moment he said would stay with him forever.
He described her as a woman of extraordinary strength, saying she never once complained through two years of chemotherapy, even when she could barely lift her head, and never missed a day of filming.
Gareth called her “the queen of reality TV” to the world, but to him and their daughter, she was simply “our wee Melsie” — an incredible mum, soulmate, and role model.
He added that while life can be “beautiful,” it can also be “incredibly cruel,” urging others to live fully in her memory.
