Zoe Ball has candidly revisited the heartbreak of her split from ex-husband Norman Cook — better known as DJ Fatboy Slim — revealing just how “painful” their divorce truly was, even as their relationship has since transformed into something unexpectedly stronger.
Speaking on her Dig It podcast alongside Jo Whiley, the 55-year-old presenter reflected on the emotional toll of ending her 18-year marriage — a decision she admitted was overwhelming on every level.

Zoe explained that reaching the point of separation is never simple, recalling how terrifying it felt to finally say the words that would change everything. She described the moment as deeply daunting, saying you worry about the children, your partner, and your own future all at once. But she also shared a message of hope, insisting that despite the pain, “you will come out the other side of it,” adding that children are often far more resilient than parents fear.
The former Radio 2 host, who shares son Woody, 24, and daughter Nelly, 15, with Norman, admitted she even tried living just a few doors away from him after their split — a decision that quickly proved too emotionally intense. She recalled how her mum stepped in to help, offering to swap homes temporarily, but ultimately the proximity became “a little too close to comfort,” highlighting just how raw the separation felt at the time.

Zoe and Norman first tied the knot in 1999, but their relationship had already weathered turbulence years earlier when they briefly split in 2003 following her affair. Despite reconciling, the couple eventually confirmed their permanent separation in 2016 after nearly two decades together.
Yet in a surprising twist, Zoe’s father, Johnny Ball, recently revealed that the pair’s relationship today is stronger than ever — even compared to when they were married. Speaking in an interview, he shared that the former couple are now “very good friends” and, remarkably, “closer today than they were when they were married,” calling it “a lovely thing.”

Since the split, Zoe has navigated a series of personal highs and lows. She is now reportedly in a relationship with BAFTA-winning production designer Mathieu Weekes, after previously dating Michael Reed, with whom she split in 2023. Before that, she endured the devastating loss of partner Billy Yates in 2017 following his long battle with depression.
Despite everything, Zoe’s reflections paint a powerful picture of resilience — showing that even the most painful endings can evolve into something unexpectedly positive.
