Couple with ‘150 kids’ in tears as Alan Titchmarsh ‘ruins’ garden. Alan Titchmarsh Accused of ‘Ruining’ Garden — But the Couple Who Raised 150 Children Broke Down the Moment They Saw It

Rob and Margaret Isdale were left overwhelmed after Alan Titchmarsh unveiled one of the most talked-about transformations ever seen on Love Your Garden.

The much-loved ITV1 gardening show stepped in to transform the outdoor space of the devoted couple, who have fostered more than 150 children over the past 45 years. Their garden had fallen into a neglected state, and Alan, alongside Katie Rushworth, David Domoney and Frances Tophill, set out to create something truly special in honour of their extraordinary generosity.

Wanting the makeover to reflect the warmth and care Rob and Margaret have shown to so many children, the team chose a design inspired by The Secret Garden. Their ambitious vision included turning the shed into a mock Tudor-style feature and placing aged brick pillars around the space, with Alan describing them as “ancient looking follies” to create the feeling of romantic ruins.

Alan explained the emotional thinking behind the project, saying: “I want this new garden to make them feel as cared for as the children who come to their home.”

But while the garden’s dramatic transformation was undeniably memorable, it also sparked a fierce reaction from viewers. Some were unimpressed by the unusual brick features, with one person writing: “Omg! The Love Your Garden people ruining that lovely garden … with bricks and concrete! No thank you!” Another viewer admitted: “It’s too crowded and busy for me but as long as they like it.”

Despite the divided reaction at home, the moment that mattered most came when Rob and Margaret finally saw the finished result. The couple were instantly moved to tears as they took in the transformed space.

“Goodness me! It’s the best I’ve seen it looking. Woah. Thank you so much. I can’t believe it – it’s just….” they said, clearly overwhelmed.

Adding a playful twist to the reveal, Alan told them: “We found the ruins of an old abbey in your garden.”

Margaret burst into laughter and replied: “Brilliant!” while Rob added: “I knew it would be special but that’s extra special. Thank you so much.”

In one of the show’s most emotional final scenes, Alan and his team brought together many of the 150 foster children Rob and Margaret had cared for over the years, turning the new garden into the setting for a deeply moving family reunion. It was a powerful tribute to a couple whose lives have been devoted to giving love, safety and belonging to children in need.
