“I Don’t Know How Long I Have Left To Live — My Light Is Starting To Fade, And Quickly”: MAFS Star Mel Schilling Reveals Her C.a.n.c.e.r Has Spread To Her Brain As Doctors Say There Is Nothing More They Can Do

Married At First Sight expert Mel Schilling has delivered a heartbreaking health update, revealing that her cancer is now terminal after spreading to her brain.

The 54-year-old relationship expert first shared her diagnosis in December 2023, when doctors discovered a tumour in her colon roughly the size of a lemon. The tumour — which she affectionately nicknamed “Terry” — was surgically removed, and Mel was initially given the all-clear.

But her journey took a devastating turn the following year. During a routine scan in February 2024, doctors discovered that the cancer had already spread to her lungs.

Now, in an emotional Instagram statement shared on Thursday, Mel revealed that over the Christmas period she began experiencing severe headaches and numbness down the right side of her body. After undergoing further tests, doctors confirmed the cancer had spread to the left side of her brain.

Despite undergoing radiotherapy, Mel said her medical team has now told her there is nothing more they can do.

She wrote: “After many tests I was told the cancer had spread to the left side of my brain and, despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do. Hearing those words changes everything.”

Opening up about the harsh reality she now faces, Mel added: “My light is starting to fade — and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love.”

The TV star explained that over the past two years she has undergone 16 rounds of chemotherapy — all while continuing to film Married At First Sight.

She had also been preparing to begin a groundbreaking clinical trial tailored to her specific gene type in March 2026, something that had given her renewed hope.

However, the discovery of the tumour in her brain ended those plans.

“I honestly don’t know how long I have left,” Mel admitted. “But I do know I will fight to my last breath and will be surrounded by the love and support of my people.”

Sharing a photograph with her husband Gareth and their daughter Madison, 10, Mel described them as her “everything”, explaining that simple daily tasks have now become incredibly difficult and she increasingly relies on her family’s support.

At the end of her message, Mel left fans with one powerful piece of advice drawn from her own experience.

“If I could leave you with one thing,” she wrote, “it would simply be this: if something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life.”

Friends and fellow celebrities quickly flooded the comments with messages of support.

Comedian Dawn French wrote that Mel remained “a nourishing, bright light,” while Kerry Katona added that she was sending the star “so much strength and love.”

Mel’s health struggles had already prompted a major life decision earlier this year.

After more than a decade on Married At First Sight Australia, she announced last month that she would be stepping away from the show after 12 seasons, explaining that her ongoing health battle — combined with spending months each year away from her family — had become too much.

“This hasn’t been a choice I’ve made lightly,” she said at the time. “My health challenges and living in the UK while spending up to three months a year away from my family is no longer sustainable.”

For years, Mel has been a familiar face guiding couples through the dramatic highs and lows of the reality experiment — from explosive dinner parties to tearful confessions and headline-making break-ups.

Now, as she faces the toughest chapter of her life, the beloved relationship expert says she remains determined to keep fighting, surrounded by the people she loves most.
