The season finale of BBC’s Call The Midwife delivered one of the most emotional moments in the show’s history, leaving fans devastated as a beloved character said her final goodbye.
Sunday night’s episode marked the end of series 15 of the long-running drama. The show will now take a break for several years while creator Heidi Thomas works on both a feature film and a prequel series set in the same universe. Determined to leave viewers with a powerful send-off, the finale delivered heartbreak when Sister Monica Joan passed away.

Throughout the episode there were moments of joy, including the wedding of Cyril and Rosalind and a new job opportunity for Joyce Highland. But the happiness was overshadowed by the worsening condition of Sister Monica Joan, who had earlier been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.
The much-loved nun, portrayed by 90-year-old Judy Parfitt, has been a central figure in Call The Midwife since the series first premiered in 2012. As her condition deteriorated, those closest to her gathered around her bedside to say goodbye.

In a touching twist, viewers were stunned when Sister Evangelina appeared beside her. The character, played by Pam Ferris, was a fan favourite during the show’s early seasons before dying in her sleep at Nonnatus House after suffering a stroke.
Seeing the spirit of her old friend, Sister Monica Joan softly remarked that she might have known Sister Evangelina would make an appearance. Evangelina responded that some people know when a job needs finishing and suggested Monica Joan had delayed long enough, adding that even the Almighty’s patience had worn thin.
Curious about what awaited her, Monica Joan asked what it would be like where she was going. Evangelina replied gently that it was everything they had been promised and everything she had worked for.

Emotional but peaceful, Sister Monica Joan accepted her fate. As Evangelina reached out and urged her to come along, Monica Joan’s spirit left her body with a smile. The two nuns then walked away together, joined by the spirits of other sisters in a hauntingly beautiful farewell.
Her death left the residents of Nonnatus House and the Poplar community reeling. The convent itself also faced major changes, as the midwife service prepared to evolve.
Addressing the group of nuns, midwives and Doctor Turner, Sister Julienne reflected on the difficult moment. She explained that everyone was facing both loss and change, noting that the passing of their sister and the transformation of their work felt equally painful because both were the result of time moving forward.
She then announced that Nonnatus House would become a place of prayer and charity while the order considered its next steps.
The emotional finale concluded with the characters reflecting on photographs from across the years. In the final scene, Doctor Turner’s children hung a handmade sign on the convent door reading “Temporarily Closed.”
Viewers watching at home were left heartbroken. Many rushed to social media after the episode aired, saying they were moved to tears by the powerful ending.
Some fans wrote that the finale had them crying throughout the episode, while others described it as the perfect ending to the beloved series. One viewer admitted they could not remember the last time a television show had made them cry so much.
The emotional farewell came just weeks after the show sparked frustration among fans when a schedule change delayed one episode. The BBC moved the drama from its usual slot to make way for the BAFTA Film Awards 2026, forcing viewers to wait two weeks between episodes.
Despite that temporary upset, the finale ultimately reminded fans why Call The Midwife remains one of the BBC’s most cherished dramas — delivering heartbreak, hope and unforgettable moments right until the very end.
