Ross Kemp has made an emotional return to EastEnders, reprising his iconic role as Grant Mitchell for a deeply moving storyline centred around Nigel Bates’ heartbreaking battle with dementia.
Exclusive photos reveal Grant reuniting with his brother Phil Mitchell, played by Steve McFadden, as the legendary Mitchell brothers come together once again — this time for a poignant seaside farewell to one of their oldest friends.

The touching scenes were filmed on a beach near Portsmouth in Sussex, where Grant and Phil are seen quietly reflecting on a bench while caring for Nigel, whose health has taken a devastating turn.
Ross, now 61, last appeared in Walford in February during the soap’s 40th anniversary celebrations. In that dramatic storyline, Grant returned to support Phil as his brother struggled through a suicidal breakdown. He also heroically saved his ex-wife Sharon Watts from the burning Queen Vic pub, reminding fans why Grant remains one of the show’s most beloved hardmen.
Now, his latest comeback sees the character returning to help Nigel Bates, portrayed by Paul Bradley, whose dementia is rapidly worsening.

Behind the emotional storyline lies a simple but powerful reunion. Grant and Phil are seen sitting together on a seaside bench, both wearing their trademark black leather jackets — a visual reminder of their East End past — as they reflect on their long friendship with Nigel.
Other scenes show Phil gently walking along the beach with Nigel and sharing a quiet cup of tea beside a beach hut, capturing the tender side of the famously tough Mitchell brothers.
Grant’s return to Walford is triggered after he receives a message from his son Mark, who recently came back to the Square and has been living with Phil. Mark has witnessed Nigel’s rapid decline first-hand and urges his father to visit his old friend before it’s too late.
The storyline comes shortly after another emotional return in the show. Nigel’s daughter Claire, played by Gemma Bissix, recently appeared again after 18 years away from Albert Square to visit her adoptive father while he was in hospital.

Speaking about stepping back into the role once again, Ross said he felt genuinely thrilled to return. He explained that he was delighted to be putting Grant Mitchell’s leather jacket back on and heading back to EastEnders later this year.
For longtime fans of the BBC soap, the reunion of Grant, Phil and Nigel promises to be one of the most emotional EastEnders moments in years — a powerful reminder that even the toughest characters can be brought to tears when faced with saying goodbye to a lifelong friend.
