Kate Garraway’s friends and family just want to see her smile again — but the Good Morning Britain presenter admits that the idea of dating anyone else still feels “preposterous”.
The 58-year-old broadcaster lost her beloved husband, Derek Draper, in January 2024 after a long and harrowing battle with Covid. For nearly four years, she cared for him around the clock, calling it both the hardest and most meaningful chapter of her life.

Speaking to OK! Magazine, Kate shared that she can’t yet imagine life with someone new, even though she doesn’t want to spend “the rest of her life without love.” She said, “What Derek and I loved most was our home life, just pottering around together. We had 21 years of that — and mentally, I’m still in that zone.”
A close friend revealed that although “someone is interested”, Kate is simply not ready. “Her friends are encouraging her to go out, have dinner, maybe enjoy companionship again. But she’s not rushing — she’s still grieving.”

Despite this, online gossip has linked Kate to male friends and co-workers, leading to some cruel comments suggesting she’s “moved on too fast.” But those close to her know the truth — that she still thinks about Derek every single day. “She’d never want to upset anyone, especially her children,” the source said. “Her kids and family just want her to be happy. She deserves peace after everything she went through.”

Psychotherapist Kamalyn Kaur says Kate’s feelings are completely normal. “What Kate described — mentally living in the world she built with Derek — is a natural stage of grief. Healing doesn’t follow a timeline. The right moment to love again isn’t about a calendar; it’s about when her heart finally feels open.”
As Kate prepares to appear on Celebrity Traitors, she acknowledges that one day she’ll have to think about the future — but for now, her heart still belongs to Derek.
