An emotional moment on The One Show left both the hosts and guests deeply moved as actor Robson Green opened up about the death of his father — prompting presenter Alex Jones to declare they should “just finish the show there.”

On the May 9 episode, Alex was joined by Roman Kemp for the week’s final show, welcoming guests Dannii Minogue, Chris Eubank Jr., and Robson Green. The conversation began with light-hearted sports banter, as Robson reflected on Newcastle United’s historic Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool — the club’s first domestic trophy win in 70 years.
“It wasn’t just Wembley, Newcastle rocked it,” Robson said, proudly recalling Dan Burn’s memorable header. But what began as celebration quickly turned to emotion.
Robson shared that despite having a ticket to attend the match with Alan Shearer, he couldn’t go due to filming commitments. The win meant so much that, instinctively, he reached for his phone to call his dad — only to remember that his father passed away in 2009.
“What was amazing when we won, I went to ring my dad… and then I realised he’s not here anymore. That’s what it meant. It was so important, so moving,” Robson said.

The heartfelt moment silenced the studio. Roman Kemp nodded in agreement, saying, “That’s what football can do.” Robson continued: “One city, one club. That emotional valve got opened. It was very special.”
Alex Jones was clearly affected by the story, responding with emotion: “Gosh, I think we should finish the show there, that was such a beautiful line.”
Singer Dannii Minogue added quietly: “It wiped us out.”
The moving moment came just after the show faced viewer complaints regarding its earlier VE Day tribute, which some viewers branded “a disgrace.” But on this night, Robson’s sincerity brought a rare, quiet stillness to primetime television.
