At his sold-out O2 show, Lewis Capaldi proved the biggest moment of the night wasn’t on stage. Stopping to greet a young fan in a wheelchair, he quietly donated £5,000 to her fundraiser within minutes — leaving her and her family in tears, and reminding everyone why he’s loved far beyond his music

Lewis Capaldi proved once again why fans adore him after a touching moment outside his sold-out O2 Arena show in London.

The 28-year-old singer was on his way into the venue on September 17 when he stopped to chat with Maddi Thurgood, a 24-year-old superfan who lives with an ultra-rare motor neurone condition known as SPG15. Maddi, who uses a wheelchair, had been waiting outside with her mum Carina and sister.

After taking a photo together, Carina handed Lewis a leaflet about their ongoing fundraising campaign for Maddi’s care and research into the disease. Minutes later, the family were left in shock when Capaldi quietly donated £5,000 to their GoFundMe page.

Maddi described the moment as one of the best days of her life. She said Lewis introduced himself with a smile, asked her name, and explained he couldn’t attend their upcoming charity football match because of work. “And within 10 minutes, he had gone on Instagram and donated to our cause. We all cried on the spot. It was one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever experienced.”

Lewis later took to the stage for a hit-packed set, but for Maddi, the memory she’ll treasure forever happened outside the venue. She told her hero: “Lewis, you are not just my favourite artist, you are my hero. Thank you for being so kind, for making time for me, and for giving me a memory I will never forget.”

Maddi’s next big event is a star-studded celebrity football match on September 27 at Drewitt-Barlow Stadium in Maldon, which will feature soap and reality stars rallying to support her cause.
