Simon Cowell Admits Financial Anxiety: ‘I’m Not as Rich as People Think’
Despite his status as one of the most recognisable figures in global entertainment, Simon Cowell has revealed that he’s constantly worried about money – and says his fortune isn’t as vast as the public assumes.
Speaking candidly on the How To Fail podcast, the Britain’s Got Talent mogul, 65, confessed: “I always worry about money. I haven’t made anywhere near as much as people think I have.”

Simon explained that the unpredictability of the world – from pandemics to wars – has left him feeling uneasy about financial security. “I don’t think anything’s safe anymore. Gold, cash, stocks – I guess maybe your house,” he added.
During the early days of the COVID pandemic, Cowell rushed to push his shows into production fearing an imminent industry freeze. “I told Lauren [his partner], ‘I don’t like the look of this… we’ve got to move fast.’ And we did.”
Despite still being involved in Britain’s Got Talent, which pulls in five million viewers per episode, Simon has wound down several other ventures, including The X Factor, and scaled back his entertainment company, SyCo.
At one point recently, he said he even had to ask around 20 friends to help with a new project – without pay. “I just didn’t have the money,” he admitted. “They all said yes. That was the most incredible thing.”
He denied reports estimating his worth at £500 million: “Oh God, no. I’m not even close to that. I’ve made some money, sure – but not that much.”

Reflecting on his time socialising with the ultra-wealthy, Cowell said the experience left him cold. “I didn’t like the people. They were snobby, arrogant. I asked Lauren, ‘Do we know anyone super-rich and happy?’ She said ‘No.’ I agreed.”
Now, Cowell is focused on family life with Lauren Silverman and their son Eric, 11. After multiple electric bike accidents – including one that broke his back in 2020 and another in 2022 – he’s taken a step back from his previous fast-paced lifestyle.
“I’m fine,” he concluded. “I’ve got enough. We don’t need any more. I’m happy where we are.”
