“WE NEVER IMAGINED IT COULD BE HIM…”: Gyles Brandreth Breaks Down Over Baby Grandson’s Cancer Battle That Nearly Tore Family Apart. A miracle-like ending as Kitt recovers and lives healthily after 8 years

In a deeply emotional revelation, Gyles Brandreth has opened up about one of the most devastating chapters of his life — the moment his baby grandson Kitt was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer.

The beloved TV personality shared the heartbreaking story ahead of World Cancer Day, offering a raw and intimate look into a family’s worst nightmare — and the extraordinary strength that carried them through it.

It all began in 2017, when Gyles’ daughter Saethryd and her husband Mark noticed something unusual — a small, pea-sized lump near their baby son’s stomach. At first, doctors reassured them it was likely harmless, possibly a cyst or hernia. But further tests revealed a far more terrifying truth: Kitt had rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer affecting fewer than 60 children in the UK each year.

At just 15 months old, Kitt was thrust into a life-threatening battle that no family could ever be prepared for. Gyles admitted the diagnosis shattered everything they thought they knew about the disease, saying they had always believed cancer was something that affected older people, never a child — and certainly not their own.

Kitt was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital, where he began an intense and gruelling course of chemotherapy. The treatment took a severe toll on his tiny body — he lost his hair and suffered multiple complications, including a dangerous bacterial infection that affected both his heart and liver.

Reflecting on that time, Gyles described it as a complete shock to the system, admitting nothing prepares you for watching a child you love endure such suffering.

Yet even in the darkest moments, the family found hope in the extraordinary care provided by the hospital staff. Gyles spoke with deep gratitude about the team, saying they never once felt alone, and that the compassion and dedication of the doctors and nurses made an unbearable situation just a little easier to face.

While Kitt’s parents focused on his medical care, Gyles found his own role — bringing moments of joy and normality into the hospital room. He spent hours with his grandson in the playroom, building puzzles, sharing laughter, and teaching him funny poems — small but powerful moments that helped lift the darkness surrounding them.

The journey was far from straightforward. Kitt also developed veno-occlusive disease, a serious and potentially fatal complication caused by chemotherapy. But against all odds, he pulled through.

In November 2017, the family received the news they had been desperately hoping for — Kitt was cancer-free.

Today, Kitt is a happy and thriving 10-year-old who has now been in remission for eight years. Although he still attends annual check-ups, his story stands as a powerful testament to resilience, love, and the life-saving impact of world-class medical care.

Looking back, Gyles shared that with every passing year, he is reminded just how fortunate they are. Seeing Kitt healthy and full of life is something the family will never take for granted — and they remain forever grateful to Great Ormond Street Hospital for helping them through the darkest time of their lives.
