Davina McCall has shared emotional details about her surprise engagement to Michael Douglas — her first public interview since revealing her breast cancer diagnosis.
The beloved TV presenter, 58, confirmed in September that Douglas had proposed during a summer break in Ibiza, marking a bright new chapter following a turbulent year that saw her undergo brain surgery to remove a benign tumour.

“It was a total surprise,” Davina told HELLO! with a smile. “Michael is very funny and had spent the past two years pretending to get down on one knee and tying imaginary shoelaces on my finger. When he actually did it for real, I was terrified he was joking. But he had prepared something incredibly thoughtful — and I respected that.”
Douglas, a celebrity hairstylist whom Davina first met while filming Big Brother, popped the question during a quiet evening on the island. “We were hugging, kissing, crying — and then we heard these swimmers shouting, ‘Yay, congratulations!’ It was perfect,” she recalled.
Though deeply in love, Davina insists she’s steering clear of tradition. “I always said I don’t want an engagement ring,” she revealed, adding that the wedding will be “very small and private.”

Her engagement marks a new beginning after the end of her 18-year marriage to Matthew Robertson, with whom she shares children Holly, Tilly and Chester. Davina admits this new phase feels “different” and “meaningful” as she finds peace and confidence in midlife. “Getting married at this stage of life is so different… it’s a big deal,” she reflected.
Speaking at HELLO!’s Second Act Power List event, where she was honoured as one of the leading women thriving beyond 40, Davina radiated optimism despite her health battle. “I’m grateful for every minute,” she said. “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m in such a good space, and age has given me that.”

Just days before the event, Davina revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering a lump while filming The Masked Singer. She underwent a lumpectomy and will complete five days of radiotherapy in January as a precaution.
“I was very angry when I found out,” she admitted. “But I’ve let go of that. I’m in a much more positive place now.”
Davina’s powerful message to fans is simple but urgent: “Know your boobs. Notice any changes. Don’t procrastinate. Get your checkups. And never ignore a niggle.”
