Sian Welby has opened up about the emotional tug-of-war she faces as a new mother, top broadcaster, and devoted daughter to a father battling multiple life-threatening illnesses.
The 37-year-old This Morning and Capital FM presenter gave birth to baby Ruby last June, and while she describes motherhood as “absolute carnage but joyful,” there’s a deep ache she can’t shake — the guilt of not being able to see her dad, Ian, as much as she wants.

Ian Welby, now living with wife Helen in Nottinghamshire, has endured a relentless five-year health battle: dementia, cancer, Covid, sepsis, and pneumonia in both lungs. At one point, his weight dropped to just six and a half stone. Sian calls it “a cruel disease,” and admits the hardest part is watching her mother re-live the same exhausting emotional cycle each day.

Despite being in a “stable stage” with dementia, Ian no longer remembers Ruby’s name. Still, Sian considers herself “very lucky” to have him — even if her heart breaks every time she has to choose between her job and her family.
“Living in London for work means I can’t just pop round and see them,” she said. “It’s a constant feeling that you’re not giving enough of yourself to anyone — not your child, not your job, and not your parents.”

She calls it a “Catch-22,” and admits the emotional toll is steep. Yet through the daily chaos, Sian is holding on to the joy of being a mum — and the quiet strength of still being her dad’s daughter, even from afar.
