Fern Britton is glowing, confident, and 5st lighter — and now, she’s finally revealing what sparked the transformation.
In a striking new shoot for Woman&Home, the beloved 67-year-old presenter posed with pride, reflecting on the journey that led to her healthiest self in years. From fluctuating between sizes 22 and 12 over the decades, Fern now says she’s taken full control of her body and mind — and it all started with one critical moment.

“Two and a half years ago, my surgeon told me he’d have to totally replace my shoulder. That was it,” Fern said. “I needed to stop smoking, stop drinking, get my eating under control and stop lying in bed feeling sorry for myself.”

She embraced the Couch to 5K programme, drastically reduced her sugar intake, and began exercising regularly — often hitting the gym with her daughter Grace at 6am.
“I used to have a huge sugar addiction. I never had the off switch. But turns out, just eating three proper meals a day — the thing people have been telling me to do for 60 years — actually works!” she laughed.

As she nears 70, Fern says it’s not about looks — it’s about responsibility. “It’s my duty to stay healthy for my kids. I don’t want them to feel guilty for not checking in. I want them to see me living well.”

With a new novel (A Cornish Legacy) on the way and her TV career in the rearview mirror, Fern is embracing a new identity: not as a presenter, but as an author. “I’m not chasing TV or love,” she admitted. “I’m chasing a peaceful, independent life — and finally, I can say it: I’m a writer.”
