Scott Mills Finally Breaks His Silence As Sara Cox Replaces Him At The BBC — the two have been close friends for 30 years, and now she’s stepping into his role. But Scott Mills’ response may surprise many people — especially Sara Cox herself

Sara Cox has shared an emotional tribute to the friends who have supported her through every stage of her career — just days after stepping into the very role once held by her close friend of more than 30 years, Scott Mills.

But while fans initially feared the move could damage their decades-long friendship, sources close to Scott now say the exact opposite is true.

According to insiders, Scott’s feelings about Sara replacing him are “hard to put into words,” because while the circumstances surrounding his BBC exit remain painful, he is also genuinely happy for her.

One source claimed Scott believes Sara has “worked for this moment for years” and that “nobody deserves it more.”

They also stressed that Scott’s departure from the BBC “has absolutely nothing to do with Sara,” adding that he has made it clear he does not blame her in any way — and that their friendship remains completely unchanged despite the dramatic shake-up.

Sara and Scott’s bond stretches back to the late 1990s when both joined Radio 1 within a year of one another. Over the decades, they became two of the BBC’s most recognisable radio voices, supporting each other through career highs, personal milestones and major life moments.

Sara even attended Scott’s wedding to husband Sam in Barcelona back in 2024, while Scott publicly praised Sara just last year during her Children In Need challenge, calling her “a hero” and saying he was “so proud.”

Now, in a twist few could have imagined, Sara has not only taken over the Radio 2 Breakfast Show — she has also replaced Scott on the BBC’s Eurovision coverage.

And it was Sara’s emotional Instagram message this week that suddenly took on a much deeper meaning.

Sharing a smiling photo from a lunch with close friends, she wrote: “Always there to cheer me on or pick me up & dust me down. Thank you for decades of friendship, love, support & lols.”

Fans quickly linked the emotional timing of the post to the enormous pressure surrounding her new role — and the difficult circumstances behind Scott’s departure.

In her official statement about landing the Breakfast Show, Sara admitted she felt “ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed” to be trusted with such an “iconic show.”

“It’s been a dream to host the Breakfast Show since I joined Radio 2 and it feels like a bit of a full circle for me,” she said.

Despite the headlines surrounding Scott’s exit, sources insist there is no bitterness between the pair behind closed doors.

Instead, friends reportedly say Scott is trying to focus on Sara’s success rather than his own heartbreak — because after three decades side by side, their friendship means far more than one BBC role ever could.
