In a move no one saw coming, Michelle Ryan has returned to EastEnders as iconic character Zoe Slater — two decades after she last appeared in Walford. And this time, she’s not just back for a cameo. She’s here to stay.

Michelle, now 40, made her bombshell comeback this week just as Kat Slater prepares to marry Alfie Moon for the third time and take over the Queen Vic pub. The reunion is especially explosive considering Zoe and Kat’s rocky past, made unforgettable by the now-legendary 2001 scene where Zoe screamed “You ain’t my mother!” — only for Kat to deliver the bombshell reply: “Yes I am!”
Speaking about her return, Michelle said it felt like “coming home” and that everything aligned perfectly — especially after reconnecting with former co-stars Kacey Ainsworth and Kim Medcalf. “I started seeing all this love for Zoe online,” Michelle said. “Then the new Exec Producer turned out to be a huge fan of the Slaters — it was fate.”

Zoe will appear in two more episodes this week before becoming a full-time fixture in Albert Square this summer.
Despite previously vowing “you couldn’t get me back”, Michelle now admits that “never say never” was the truest thing she could’ve said. “Zoe’s changed,” she teased. “She’s a mess, she’s been struggling alone, and there’s a lot of drama coming — I can’t say too much, but she needs help. Whether she’ll accept it is another story.”

Zoe’s past storylines were some of the most dramatic in EastEnders history — from her involvement in the murder of Den Watts, to a heartbreaking pregnancy and disastrous romances. During her years away, she remained estranged from Kat once again.
Executive Producer Ben Wadey revealed that Zoe was at the top of his wish list: “She transcends time,” he said. “The Slaters wouldn’t be complete without her.”
Michelle originally quit in 2005 in pursuit of Hollywood, landing the lead in The Bionic Woman. But the series was cancelled after one season. She admitted later that she left because she “got bored” of the daily soap grind. But times have changed — and so has Zoe.
