Julie Goodyear’s Dementia Journey Continues — But Her Husband’s Loving Tribute Warms Hearts

On March 29, legendary Coronation Street actress Julie Goodyear quietly celebrated her 83rd birthday with her husband, Scott Brand, who shared a rare and touching update from their home in Lancashire.

Best known for her iconic role as Bet Lynch, Julie appeared radiant in a photo Scott posted on Facebook, accompanied by the heartfelt caption: “Just got home with my lovely wife and we’ve had a fantastic day together. Thank you so much for all your birthday wishes from both of us.”

Julie, who was diagnosed with dementia in March last year, has been living more privately since the announcement. The couple has since sold their £1.3 million home and now receive ongoing support from the Alzheimer’s Society.

Julie and Scott, who first met 29 years ago when Scott delivered plaster to her home during renovations, will celebrate their 18th wedding anniversary this June. In recent public appearances, including a local Alzheimer’s Society event in October 2023, the couple was seen smiling and holding each other at the starting line — a rare but powerful reminder of their enduring bond.

Opening up about the emotional toll of Julie’s condition, Scott shared: “Julie has always been extremely glamorous, never without her make-up, especially her leopard print outfits. But now, the makeup goes untouched, and her wardrobe no longer interests her.”

He added with visible emotion: “I miss the fun-loving wife I’ve always known — the woman whose smile lit up every room. All of that is slowly fading, and it’s heartbreaking to witness.”

Scott also admitted that, at first, he resisted help. “I thought I could handle everything on my own. We’ve always been private. But reality set in fast — I realized I needed support.”

Julie began her career as a model in the 1960s before making her television debut in 1965. She joined Coronation Street in 1966 and became a regular from 1970 until her departure in 1995. Fans were thrilled when she briefly returned in 2002–2003, and she also made appearances on Celebrity Big Brother and Hollyoaks in the years following.

Today, the glamorous icon faces one of life’s greatest challenges, but her story continues to resonate — not just as a soap legend, but as a symbol of love, resilience, and the quiet courage it takes to live each day with dignity.
