Jesy Nelson has overcome the hell of online trolling that left her “suicidal,” walked away from Little Mix at the height of the band’s success, and weathered a series of turbulent romances to become a role model for her children — now transforming every ounce of pain into a source of strength for her twin daughters

Once celebrated as one quarter of chart-topping girl band Little Mix, Jesy Nelson has lived a life that looks glamorous from the outside—but has been marked by relentless scrutiny, personal battles, and, most recently, unimaginable heartbreak.

Now a mother to eight-month-old twins Ocean Jade and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster, Jesy has spoken candidly about how years of cruelty, isolation and emotional strain have forged a resilience she hopes to pass on to her daughters—especially after revealing they have been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

In an emotional message to fans, Jesy explained that the genetic condition affects every muscle in the body and could prevent her girls from ever walking. Still, she clung to hope, saying she truly believes her daughters can “defy all the odds with the right help and do things that have never been done.”

A Success Story Shadowed by Cruelty

Jesy shot to fame after winning The X Factor in 2011, but the spotlight quickly became punishing. She has previously admitted that constant abuse about her appearance stripped away her confidence, leaving her anxious and withdrawn. Reflecting on that period, she once said she was no longer the happy, confident person she used to be, describing herself as a “vulnerable, nervous wreck.”

The abuse didn’t fade with success. Even after changing her appearance and returning to the stage, the criticism persisted. In later interviews and documentaries, Jesy spoke about reaching an extremely dark place mentally, explaining that she felt overwhelmed and desperate for the pain to stop. Those experiences ultimately pushed her to confront how damaging fame had become to her wellbeing.

Walking Away to Survive

In December 2020, Jesy made the painful decision to leave Little Mix after nine years. Announcing her exit, she said the pressure of being in the group had taken a serious toll on her mental health and that she needed to focus on what made her happy. She thanked her bandmates—Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock—for memories she would treasure forever, while admitting she didn’t yet know what the next chapter would look like.

Though her departure was followed by a period of strained relationships and public controversy, time appears to have softened old wounds. In recent years, small gestures on social media have suggested bridges slowly being rebuilt.

Love, Loss—and a New Beginning

Jesy’s romantic life has been as turbulent as her career, with high-profile relationships often unfolding under public scrutiny. After several break-ups, she found stability with rapper Zion Foster, whom she began dating in late 2022. The couple welcomed their twin daughters prematurely in May 2025 after a high-risk pregnancy complicated by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

Just months later came another devastating blow: the SMA diagnosis. Jesy revealed that early concerns about her babies’ development were initially dismissed, making the eventual news even harder to process. Doctors warned that without timely treatment, the condition can drastically shorten life expectancy—words Jesy described as the most heartbreaking she has ever heard.

Yet even through tears, she vowed to fight for her girls, saying the best thing she can do now is get them the care they need and “hope for the best.”

Finding Pride at Last

Amid the fear and exhaustion, Jesy has also spoken about a quiet personal breakthrough. After decades of extreme dieting and self-criticism, she says motherhood has finally helped her see her body differently. Sharing candid photos and reflections, she admitted she never thought it would take having two babies she nearly lost to realise how incredible her body truly is.

She ended that message with a plea to other new mothers: be kinder to yourself, ignore the pressure to “snap back,” and remember what your body has done.

For Jesy Nelson, the journey from pop stardom to motherhood has been anything but easy—but as she faces her toughest chapter yet, she is determined that her daughters will grow up seeing strength, honesty and hope where once there was pain.
