“I’m Coming to the End”: James Whale Shares Tearful Update on Terminal Cancer Battle

Veteran broadcaster James Whale has delivered a devastating and emotional update about his terminal cancer battle, revealing that he now spends much of his time crying and feels he is “coming to the end”.

Speaking via video link on TalkTV from his home, where he appeared beside his wife Nadine, the 72-year-old presenter opened up about the overwhelming emotional toll of his illness. James, who was first diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2000 and has lived with stage four cancer since 2019, announced earlier this year that he had stopped all treatments.

“Today I got very emotional,” James admitted. “I can feel it all coming back. I want to stop, but I can’t. I spend a lot of time crying. It’s not the physical pain—it’s the emotion of everything that really gets me.”

James has credited his occasional appearances on TalkTV as a much-needed source of purpose during this final stage of his life. “If it wasn’t for work letting me appear now and then, we would have gone round the bend. It gives you a reason to get up and do something, even if it’s small.”

Nadine, by his side, expressed how tough it has been for both of them. “It’s very sad, it’s very hard—but you’re doing amazingly well,” she told him.

James tragically lost his first wife Melinda to lung cancer in 2018, and now faces his own final chapter. Reflecting on his time in broadcasting, he thanked TalkTV for continuing to support him during these painful days: “There’s no treatment left. I’m at the end. I’m just hoping I can carry on a little longer. But when I can’t do the show anymore—I’ll stop.”

Fans and public figures have flooded social media with messages of support. MP Dame Andrea Jenkyns posted: “Heartbreaking to see you go through this. Sending love and prayers, James.” Long-time listeners echoed her sentiments, describing him as a “radio legend” and “one of a kind”.
