James Whale Gives Heartbreaking Health Update, Says He’s Reached the End of His Cancer Battle
Veteran broadcaster James Whale has revealed that he’s reached the final stage of his fight against cancer and has officially ended treatment. The 73-year-old TalkTV host, who’s been battling stage 4 kidney cancer for five years, shared the emotional update live on air this weekend.

Speaking alongside his longtime co-host Ash Gould, James said: “I’m at the final stage of my cancer journey. There’s no more treatment left for me.” He added that his long-running show might only continue for “a few more weeks.”
James explained that his condition had worsened and recent complications, including a serious flu that landed him in intensive care, have made recovery unlikely. Still, in true James Whale fashion, he remained composed and even cracked a joke: “Maybe it’ll help me, you never know… but with the meds I’m on, I’m all over the place.”
Despite everything, James said he hopes to continue broadcasting for as long as he can, but is prepared to step away when it becomes too much: “The moment I can’t do the show anymore, I’ll stop.”

James also encouraged fans to follow his podcast Tales of the Whales, which he co-hosts with his wife Nadine, affectionately known as “Lady W.” She’s been his rock through it all, managing his care and supporting every step of his health journey.
The radio icon, who received an MBE and has been in broadcasting for over 50 years, also reflected on his legacy with gratitude: “If I die tomorrow, I’ve had a wonderful time.”
He previously founded the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer in 2006 — now known as Kidney Cancer UK — which remains the UK’s leading kidney cancer charity.
