Gary Barlow Says Emotional Goodbye to The Circus Tour as 55-Year-Old Star Admits: ‘I Physically Can’t Do This Show Again’

Gary Barlow has admitted that Take That’s spectacular The Circus tour has reached the end of the road, revealing that his body can no longer cope with the physically demanding production at the age of 55.

The singer shared the emotional update after the band’s final performance in Dublin on Saturday, confirming that while the tour has been one of the greatest achievements of their career, it will not return for a third run.

Having first performed The Circus in 2009 when he was 38, Gary reunited with bandmates Howard Donald and Mark Owen for the large-scale revival this year. But after months of high-energy performances, he confessed that repeating the experience again is no longer realistic.

Reflecting on the milestone, Gary wrote: “Best tour ever – to say that 35 years into our career is saying something #circuslive.”

He later shared a much more personal message with fans.

“And another tour comes to a close. Somehow, this one feels a little different.”

He continued: “With the other tours, it’s always comforting to know there will almost definitely be a next time. But I’m pretty sure this tour won’t return.”

Gary explained that performing the demanding show nearly two decades after its original run had pushed him to his physical limits.

“I was 38 when we originally did this show, and I have to say it’s been a whole other challenge doing it as a 55-year-old.”

“I just can’t see a way I could physically do this show again.”

Bringing his heartfelt message to a close, he added:

“So, it’s with an extremely heavy heart that I leave The Circus in my past. I got to run away with The Circus twice.”

“Now I’m running towards our next exciting, brand new show.”

Despite saying farewell to one of Take That’s most iconic productions, Gary reassured fans that the group’s future remains bright, teasing plans for an entirely new live show.

Throughout the tour, fans praised Gary’s incredible fitness transformation, with many noticing his muscular physique as he performed new single Sweet July alongside Howard Donald and Mark Owen.

The singer had previously revealed the intense preparation that went into getting his body ready for the demanding performances.

Months before rehearsals began, Gary documented his training at the luxury wellness clinic Lanserhof at The Arts Club, where he underwent a series of fitness and health assessments.

His social media updates showed him running on a treadmill while wearing a VO2 max testing mask, monitoring his health statistics, strengthening his legs on specialist gym equipment and even undergoing blood tests.

Posting one photo with a tube in his arm, he joked: “No pain no gain.”

In another update, after completing a spine assessment, Gary laughed: “Still in one piece.”

His dedication paid off, helping him complete one final run of one of Take That’s most physically demanding productions.

Gary has previously spoken openly about the difficult relationship he once had with his body following Take That’s split in the 1990s.

In the band’s Netflix documentary, he revealed that he deliberately gained weight because he wanted to avoid being recognised after the group broke up.

“There was a period of about 13 months when I didn’t leave the house once. And I also started to put weight on.”

“And the more weight I put on the less people would recognise me.”

“I thought: ‘This is good, this is what I’ve been waiting for, living a normal life.’ So I went on a mission. If the food passed me, I’d just eat it… and I killed the pop star.”

Gary later admitted he developed an eating disorder after his solo career stalled, describing how he struggled with jealousy over former bandmate Robbie Williams’ success and eventually fell into a cycle of binge eating and purging.

He recalled reaching a turning point in 2003 when he decided to rebuild both his health and confidence.

“No, I’m not having this anymore, I’m going to change. I want to change and I’m determined that this is not who I’ve become.”

Although Gary has now closed the curtain on The Circus, his emotional farewell made clear that he has no intention of slowing down completely, with a brand-new Take That chapter already on the horizon.
