Gavin and Stacey star Alison Steadman has opened up about how the death of her mother from pancreatic cancer reshaped her relationship with grief — and led her to confront her own mortality.

The beloved actress, now in her late 70s, lost her mum Majorie in the 1990s after a two-year battle with the disease. Her mother spent her final days at the Marie Curie Hospice in Liverpool, where Alison regularly visited. Decades later, the loss still brings tears.
In a deeply personal interview with Your Later Life, Alison said: “Mum never really talked about her death. We didn’t have that conversation as a family. Maybe we should have — we were too focused on keeping her hopeful.”
But the experience left a lasting impact. Alison now believes it’s important to “acknowledge that your time will come.”
“While I do think about my own death sometimes, I try not to dwell on it,” she shared. “But you do need to be realistic.” She revealed she’s created a funeral playlist — though she admits her music choices keep changing. “It’s an ever-evolving plan,” she said with a smile.

Speaking in 2024, Alison also reflected on how she first received the news about her mother’s terminal diagnosis: “The doctor said, ‘Your mother has two to six months to live.’ He was a brilliant man, but he had no idea how to talk to people. It was like a punch in the chest.”
Despite the pain, Alison continues to find purpose in her work and lives each day with gratitude. “I’m still busy, still working, and I’m very privileged,” she added.
After losing her mum to cancer, Alison Steadman still cries — but now she’s facing her own mortality with calm realism… and a changing funeral playlist.
