Radio icon James Whale has just weeks to live, and his wife Nadine Talbot-Brown has shared a tearful update that’s prompted an outpouring of love from fans.
James, 73, has been battling cancer for over five years, with more than 20 tumours spread across his spine, brain and lungs. Now, as he spends his final days in a hospice near their home in Kent, Nadine has taken to social media to thank those who’ve stood by them for half a century.

“I would like to thank all of his friends here on X and all of his wonderful listeners and viewers for tuning in over the last 50 years,” Nadine wrote. “We have both been deeply moved by the lovely messages. Au revoir and thank you all.”
The response was instant — heartfelt tributes flooded in from loyal fans, praising James as a “gamechanger” and “a master of his craft.” One fan remembered listening to his Night Owls show as a child, while another called James and Nadine “a brave couple” for publicly sharing their journey.

The veteran broadcaster, whose voice defined British late-night radio for decades, said he’s being cared for “brilliantly” in the hospice, though he’s struggling to breathe. “Obviously I feel very sad, especially for Nadine and my family. I wish I could talk better so I could do another show,” he admitted. “I’d like to do one more podcast if possible.”

Despite the pain and breathlessness, James continues writing his weekly column for the Daily Express and hopes to share more reflections in his final podcast. The couple’s online series, Tales of the Whales, has offered strength and advice to cancer sufferers and their families — always delivered with their trademark mix of honesty and dark humour.
Even in the face of death, James Whale remains a voice — and a force — for millions.
