‘I’m cancer-free’ – Anne Nolan breaks down in tears as she’s officially declared clear after five years of living in fear

After years of uncertainty and fear, Anne Nolan has finally received the news she dared not dream of – she is officially cancer-free. But as the 74-year-old singer celebrated her remission, her joy was intertwined with grief for her two late sisters, Bernie and Linda, both of whom lost their lives to the same cruel disease.

Anne, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 and again in 2020, admitted she couldn’t bring herself to open the NHS letter that could’ve changed everything. “I was terrified,” she confessed. “If it was bad news, I didn’t know how I’d handle it.” When she finally summoned the courage, relief washed over her in tears. “It said I was all clear and it hadn’t spread. I was just so emotional and grateful.”

Anne says being cured of cancer is tinged with sadness after losing sister Linda to the disease earlier this year. The pair battled cancer together

Yet, as she clutched her remission letter, her thoughts turned to Bernie and Linda. “Although I was absolutely thrilled, I felt so sad. It wasn’t guilt, just heartbreak that they didn’t survive. I’ve just been lucky.”

Linda died earlier this year at 65, and Bernie passed in 2013 at just 52. Anne doesn’t like the term “fighting cancer,” as it implies those who pass didn’t fight hard enough. “It’s not about strength. It’s about chance.”

The Nolan family have been hit hard by cancer, with Brian, Coleen and Anne having all been diagnosed with it

Now embracing life with a sense of urgency, Anne is determined to make the most of every day. From watching her grandchildren grow, to dreaming of visiting the Vatican, learning French, or even taking swimming lessons, Anne’s bucket list is long and spirited.

Still, the scars of her journey remain. “I had anxiety about dying during COVID. I was in hospital alone for 11 days. I still get scared when I shower – that’s how I found both cancers.” But she refuses to let fear stop her. “I don’t want to die. I love being alive.”

Surrounded by her daughters Amy and Alex, her grandchildren, and her famous Nolan family, Anne is clinging to every joyful moment. “When you survive something like this, you value life more than ever. You say yes to everything.”
